There are 15M reasons ($$$s )not to feel sorry for Billick. I do think he is a good coach, but maybe the timing for all of this is right.
There is a total "Vanilla staleness" in this Offense and Billick, being the Play Caller, is held responsible.
This was the year to let Nueheisel have his input and it didn't take place. Billick's 'us against the world" mentality and his stubborness made this team a winner and it also caused this team to underacheive, 2007.
Once again the word stale can be brought up. The once powerful message became mundane to the veterans and the youngsters weren't here in '99 -'02 when it was working.
Next step? I think Rex Ryan should get the first and most prominent look as the new Coach.
Same Defensive systems with a new OC ( Jason Garrett as ASST. HC comes to mind immediately) and maybe have his brother Rob be the Defensive Coach.
The players respect Ryan and he could retain most of Billick's former staff and "Move those Chains" in reality.
Playerwise....I don't know whether Troy Smith is the answer, but he lookes pretty poised out there. He held up well against 2 blitzing dominated Defenses in his 2 starts. We'll be picking 8th and Matt Ryan will be gone and he's going to be the only Rookie QB who could have any chance of stepping into a NFL starting lineup.
The nucleus is there and with Ryan's hiring, a healthy squad and another good Draft....this team could be right back in the hunt again.
Having said all of that, I wouldn't be too surprised to see "Jut Jaw" Cowher come in here , though....LOL
Not many owners have a former Coach in their suite during a regular Season game, as has been reported, such as the Bisciotti - Cowher incident.
I think Cowher fell into the same staleness in Pittsburgh. Maybe a fresh start in Baltimore, would revitalize Bill as well.
We'll see what happens in the next few weeks.

Anybody but Ryan,we need a coach with an offensive imagination,we don't need a defensive coach to take over, the defense is okay, the offense sucks

I think Ogden needs to retire anyway, stop delaying it we need to build the O-line for the future.
