Going forward

Full story: Baltimore Sun

Rex Ryan was back at his desk yesterday, opening mail and returning calls. He has been on a whirlwind tour recently, but nothing has changed.

"Ryan likes Cameron. He expects the Ravens to be tough on offense, creative and always on the attack. "I thought signing him is bigger than signing me ... well, almost," Ryan said, smiling. "I've always thought we had talent on offense, just as much as we had on defense. But Cameron knows how to make it work. He makes a defense work every single snap. I'm really encouraged by his signing."
This is a good sign for Ravens. Best quote fom anyone yet about the O.C.

"I've always thought we had talent on offense, just as much as we had on defense."

Wow. No wonder they didn't hire this dope. Way to throw Billick under the bus, fatboy. Ryan should count his lucky stars the Ravens are even letting him come back because we all know Ray Lewis is the REAL defensive coordinator in Baltimore and Marvin, Mike Nolan and Ryan have been able to pad their previously flimsy resumes and make millions via Ray-Ray's hard work and unsurpassed leadership. That is fact.

This article was overdue. Glad to have him back and learn a thing or two about him as a person.(ie, the 2nd Falcons interview)

If the corporate image is so desirable, heŽd upstage Mike Nolan in a suit.

Now that this is cleared up, this is gonna be an exciting season.
Ooooh, yes.

Now Mike...you know as well as I do, the only reason Ryan wasnt hired as HC is because he's a black man......oh wait a minute.....no he isnt.

But if he were....OMG can you guys imagine the article that we would be reading now?

Damn I cant wait to get this season started.

Rex gets a respectable 3 year contract this year. Remember these coaches have all crossed paths in the past. Assuming they did like and respect each other - As we all know, there is nothing like hooking up with your buddies from the past. Sounds like Rex is man enough to get over the head coach debocle and if what he is saying about the new coaches is true (which from him I expect it is)the upcoming season will be interesting.

Rex's attitude is exactly why he didn't head a HC position. Honestly, what does he have to brag about? He didn't do anything that the previous DCs have done. Ray built his image as a top nothc guy the same way that he built Marvin's and Mike's. Let's be frank, parking in the HC's parking spot the day of the interview is beyond cheesie! In fact, it would have said more about him as a leader if he would have parked in the janitor's spot. We need an organizational guy at the top like harbaugh, not a 'me' guy like Billick was and Rex would have been. Lastly, his attitude is exactly why he wouldn't be the DC if I where running this org. Let him be the DC in a bottom 10% defense and prove he is who he thinks he is...

The Ravens are getting closer, quarterback situation is the biggest issue now. Matt Ryan, he would be years down the road. This will be interesting. They need a deep threat wide reciever, a tight end ( heap is great but he is always hurt so what's the point?)Everything else is functional.

You can't agrue that our defense has been a the backbone of the Ravens for years with several defensive coaches. On the other hand the over confidence has hurt them in many games over the last several years. They think and act like they are the best, the thoughest. The Patriots no matter how good they play admit that they have to improve to continue to win. We are the best and they know they have to improve. There is a difference there that need to be addressed. Of course having an offense would make our defense look a whole lot better. So in the end lets get this offense streightened out first and leave Rex to his devises.

I posted several days ago that Ryan doesn't interview well. Welcome to the corporate world. Let's hope that being corporate doesn't do to football what it did to the music business.

I would have preferred them to hire somebody new for the DC position. I'm tired of the cocky attitude that is prevalent throughout the column. Either he learned it from the defense or the defense learned it from him but either way it has gotten old and stale. I hope to see some real changes with this team and not a rehash job such as the Orioles do every year.

I would add a corner to that list and a pass rusher. I says this only because we don't know the situation concerning Rolle and Price. Age and health will become a factor with them and maybe even our other corner.

Is this year a last gasp to get to the playoffs or are we looking to rebuild significantly with an eye on '09?

He can brag about his units effort in the biggest game in Ravens history. The 15 - 6 loss to the Kolts at home last year in the championship game. A championship effort but with Billick's lack of coaching for nauught. You want to beat up on the man that's ok just give him his due. When has any team held the Kolts to just 6 points recently. Don't blame Rex he and his boys were ready. Fortunatly the real problem has been fired.

Here's some of the things that the Ravens have to be concerned with:

Quarterback
McNair, Boller, Smith or someone else?

Tight end?
Heap's replacement through the draft?

Offensive line
Ogden, Flynn coming back or retiring?

Defensive line
Price coming back or retiring? Need someone behind him and must bolster the line. We need a pass rush specialist.

Linebackers
Lewis in the downside of his career?

Corners
Rolle, C-Mac injuries and health issues

If you take the top 8 teams in the NFL do you think that they have this many questions as to personnel? Also a new head coach, a new OC with a completely new system (thank God),
and the question still hasn't been answered as to who will coach the veteran laden defense.

That seems like a lot of things have to be going well in a short period of time for the Ravens to be successful in '08. Not impossible but very difficult. It's gonna be a fun off season, something to get us through the annual baseball

Damn glad to have Ryan as the General of the Defense. Ryan is like General George S. Patton of World War II fame. When it came to killing you wanted him up front, when the King comes a callin you want him in the background. So I am going to start calling Rex, Old Blood and Guts Ryan. I am very glad he's a Raven.

Even if Rex has little to do with the defense's success...he provide's continuity. Maybe his failure at getting a HC position will provide motivation for the '08 defense to "put a little hot sauce" on the opposition???
I think the new coach and his staff are (by now) well aware of this team's weaknesses and are preparing appropriately. Guess we'll see, eh?

I meant held the Kolts to 15 pts. with a offense giving the ball away like it was a Christmas present.

Rex isn't going anywhere. The Ravens will still have a top 10 defense. But the pass defense needs a lot of work to succeed.

Rex Ryan is an outstanding coach. I love his attitude. He's a coach, not a pretty boy. I think we have solid coaching, now if we can just fill some major gaps, starting with QB, we can be competitive again.

I agree the team has a lot of question marks. I think the biggests ones are quarterback and cornerback. I would draft a corner in the 1st round and a quarterback in the 2nd if any good ones are still available.

Isn't Adam Terry supposed to take Ogdens place? I also thought Chris Chester was supposed to take Flynns place as well.

I think Ray has a few years left (If Junior Seau can still play, Ray can). Replacing Pryce is another issue for the draft.

If we draft well and Troy Smith can develop into a starter, we could be a contender next year.
