It's new start for Gaither at tackle

Full story: Baltimore Sun

It will be tough for anyone to get out of the shadow of Jonathan Ogden . But if anyone can, it would be 6-foot-9, 350-pound Jared Gaither.

What are you nuts? You couldn't replace Brooks and you couldn't replace Johnny, but replacing Ogden - no problem. you'll see. If you memtion Ogden's name with the same alure as Brooks and Johnny you should be shot.

Oh, Mark Schlereth... The guy who said Nagta would "...spend more time on the grass than on his feet...a terrible pick". He hates the Ravens and will never have a positive thing to say. Mediocre player turns poor analyst. Surprise!

This team won't miss a beat without J.O. He hasn't been an All Pro since 05. Whoever is the starting QB can rest easy.

What all of these articles and media types seem to be forgetting is that JO was hardly on the field last year and when he was it was very short-lived. We've already been in transition and if Gaither isn't the answer then we need to get Terry back over there since he's done a decent job when healthy.

Ogden was a great player and surely a Hall of Famer. But, he hasn't been totally healthy or playing at as hi a level lately and Terry and Gaithers have played pretty well when they replaced him. Ozzie has done a pretty good job of bringing in young talent to rebuild the OL. Many experts when rating the Ravens 2008 draft forget to include Gaithers who they got with their 2008 5th rd pick in the supp draft getting him a yr early, now he has a yrs experience. Gaithers, Grubbs, Brown, Yanda, Terry with Chester, Rimpf, Cousins and Hale should be a pretty good starting young group with some nice depth. I think if the Ravens struggle it will be more so due to lack of talent or depth at WR, DE or CB than due to the OL.

Mediocre player? Three time Super Bowl Starter/winner, 30 surgeries, and walked away from a 6 year,$42 million deal he could have milked? Instead he dissolved the contract, thus freeing up a ton of cap room for Denver.

Looks like you have a whole lot to learn about football. "Mediocre player turned poor analyst." Hopefully nobody really ever listens to you. Sadly, I'm sure there will be plenty of idiots who agree with your worthless opinion...

"Stink" is a Raven hater, but he was a decent player and better thsn Salsbury.

Gaither is going to be fine. Terry is also a decent LT. The Ravens have been developing a bunch of good looking prospects at O line, but it will be a long time before any of them play up to the level J.O. set.

Show me what he ever said to make you think that he hated the Ravens.
Only an idiot would say something so stupid. Did you even know who he was before you read this artical? BTW he did play for Washington.

How about ESPN in general? Than again they are just always busy kissing New York and Boston/New Englands ass so we really should not care what they say that much. I really only watch when they're talking about something that interests me, which is becoming a lot less frequent.

As for life after Ogden, it will be a transition but we'll be fine. I think Gaither will be a pretty solid tackle. It was the right move for JO to retire, he was injured for six games last year and had a less-than-stellar season when he played. We're moving forward with our younger O-line, which has the potential to be outstanding in the years to come, so Ogden staying would have made less sense to me.

I don't know for sure that the "Ravens O-Line will be just fine this year. They have only begun to piecemeal this unit together. OZ has finally committed the resourses to upgrade and replace. They are for the first time in a decade without Flynn and JO. They need to be sure that they have what they need - obviously they thought Chester would be able to unseat Flynn but they were wrong. Who knows at this point who will fill the final 5 slots? NO on including CC and JH know at this time.

They have a long process to "be just fine.

But they appear to have the number of bodies to compete and transition and then "gel as a unit."

Supposedly, Jason Brown already looks very competent as a center, better than Chester (which is too bad for Chris). I think Jared Gaither is the right size and it would seem he has the right athletic abilities to if not replace JO, then at least fill in admirably. Apparently left guard is Grubbs' natural position, and according to reports, Yanda is more a natural guard than tackle. So if they can all step into those roles and gel as a unit, then you're looking at most of the O-line right there.

The only real question mark, that I can see, is right tackle. It may well turn out that Adam Terry could still be a valuable asset at that position. Or who knows, it could be Oneil Cousins. Or someone else.

But as long as they step up, and learn how to run block AND pass protect, I think we just might "be alright" this coming season. The major reason for the horrible line performance last season, were injuries and a rotating lineup.

Ogden was an awesome player. I recall a game a few years ago when he and Mulitalo mowed the Cowboys d line down to the point where J. Lewis wasn't even touched until five yards down field. The Ravens won the Super Bowl that year. None of these guys have proven they are anything like him, and though I hope they come close, it would be silly to say there won't be some transition problems. Ogden was the best at his position in his day and maybe ever. You don't replace guys like that in a heartbeat.

I think people forget that the line has already been in transition from last year. Gaither has already had starting experience as have the other O-line with the exceptions of the rookies of course. I don't see the line being terrible but then again I don't think it is going to be phenomenal either; however middle of the road should be good enough with our defense.

Gaither has the physcial ability to be a top tackle in this league but I'm not sure he has the work ethic to fill in for Ogden. Time will tell.

BTW, Schlereth was a very good football player, anyone who argues otherwise hasn't watched much football in the last 15 yrs.
