Under the Raider: Chaz Schilens - Thoughts from the Dark Side

Full story: tfdssports.com

OK, I know that under the Raider is a bad pun, but bear with me here. Here on TFDS, I will be intermittently profiling under the radar players who I expect to do big things in 2009 based on what I have seen in minicamp and organized team activities.

Schilens will be a prime target this year for Russell. If you've ever seen him play, he is just absolutly amazing. He's got the vertical for the high out of reach passes; he's got good hands, something we haven't seen since Tim Brown and Jerry Rice. In the little action he got, the commentators were shocked every time a pass was thrown his way because if it was within his arms reach he was making the catch. I mean, they obviously are expecting to call an incomplete pass because the Raiders have thrown a lot of them the last several years, but all of a sudden we have a new #81 and he's picking up where the last one left off and we are moving the chains more and showing signs of life.
GO RAIDERS!!!!

I was surprised whenever he finally got his chance and I don't think Tom Flores and Greg Papa could beleive that they were actually calling completed passes on third down whenever it was thrown to Schilens. I mean they would sound like they were prepared to say that the pass was incomplete (which I guess it's natural when you've had to say that for so long) but they seemed quite excited to actually call a completed pass to a 7th round pick rookie that was pretty much unheard of.

Last preseason, I recall Flores making the comment that he really liked Schilens as a prospect. It does not seem that Flores goes out his way a lot to give his approval when discussing players. Bottom line, when Flores likes a player, he is probably really good.
