I love reading the comments from Tampa readers who continue to deride UCF as a university, and Orlando as a sports town.
As I continue to point out at every opportunity, the University of Central Florida is a far better undergraduate institution than USF, and as soon as the UCF medical school is completed, our graduate programs will be hands-down superior to USF's. UCF has higher admission standards, higher average SATs, more (and better) campus housing, more National Merit Scholars, and a far more attractive campus (no comparison) and student body. UCF has better athletic facilities, as well. I'm a faculty member at UCF, and if you'd like to try to create an argument to the contrary, I'll gladly lead you around both campuses and point out the differences.
As far as Tampa attempting to crown itself a sports town...the notion is laughable. Orlando is certainly not a good sports town, as have only an NBA team, some minor league squads, and a rising college football program. But Tampa isn't exactly sports town gold. The Buccaneers have a following, certainly, and an amazing stadium, but it's ridiculous to assert that they have a proud tradition. Instead, they simply have a couple good years, and a whole lot of stadium aerial shots from the orange '80s when they couldn't mask tens of thousands of empty seats. The same is true of USF. Until this year (this year being slightly different because of USF's single sell-out), UCF has averaged higher attendance for its games, even during awful down years. Soon, the hype will die down, and the bandwagon hoppers who came out for the Big National TV Game at Ray-Jay will bail on the Bulls (after all, only 37,000 came out for the Bulls' first game as a ranked team, against a BCS conference foe, UNC. That's a real indicator of support.). A real sports town doesn't live on hype, but on tradition. Even the worst years in Chicago or Tuscaloosa or Boston will bring sell-out crowds. In addition, Tampa has the indisputably worst team (and fan base) in Major League Baseball. No true sports town should ever lay claim to having the worst fan base in a particular sport.
Again, I don't offer Orlando as a sports utopia, but for a Tampa fan to berate Orlando as a bad sports town? Your baseball team came to Orlando--and had its very best games, and best crowds--because Tampa can't even muster support. And when I visited Raymond James for the UCF-USF game two years ago, almost half the crowd wore UCF apparel.
Last night croud 67,000+ too many to fit in any Orlando stadium. As for 2 years ago, yes, many angry and bitter fans before, during and after the game.

I don't know about that but I am sure they would not back out on a scheduled game with Florida like UCF. Good luck Florida Atlantic with UF game.!

Wow, Texas is getting there butts handed to them at home. Against the same team that got beaten by Auburn, thus got beaten by USF. I told you guys that Texas was highly overrated. I also told you guys to send Texas to Tampa, so we could have taken care of them for you. And Louisville is taken N.C. State to the wood shed 29-10. So what that tells us about UCF? That they played OK against crappy teams.

Oh no, UCF isn't ever going to go against a top 25 team except USF on the 13th. It is pitiful you guys try to compare USF and UCF. For some reason I don't hear the letters "U" "C" "F" on Espn... I wonder why? Leave the sports forecasting to the pros.

Auburn is up 14-0 on the Gators at the half. USF may just be the best team in Florida. Honestly I don't think USF is better than WVU. WVU killed themselves all game long and still had a chance to make OT at the end. Losing Pat White hurt. If he could've played and didn't it was a huge mistake. Especially on the last drive. But USF can say they shut down Slaton and White two years in a row and not many (any) teams can say that. The USF D is one of the best in the country.

You are still think that USF win is a fluke. Two years Slaton and White stats speak for themselves. Slaton 31-97, White 24-53. And if our offense would have been running full bore. It would have been a blow out.

No I don't think it was a fluke, but USF is not any better than WVU. Either team could beat the other. WVU didn't show up. USF did. The years to come will prove what I just said to be true. It's a rivalary in the making. Cya in Morgantown next year. And by the way the year before last White rushed for 177 and Slaton over 100 agianst USF. WVU can still win the Big East. If not. Hopefully we'll get Miami,Virginia Tech, or Boston College in the Gator Bowl. TRADERS. I'd much rather have USF,Cinci, and Louisville anyway. I don't see how you read my post and could say I thought it was a fluke.

usf beat the mountaineers fair/square..a good team beat a bad team..wvu lost the game for playing poorly//usf won the game for playing great end of game..i hope the usf bulls can carry the big east flag high and long...i think usf will be a top 10 team end of season...go mountaineers

USF could hang with them though. Like I said, if USF goes undefeated, they will go to the NC game.

White had 2 big runs in that game 76,65 for TD's. Slaton never broke 100 yards vs. USF. Slaton had 28 carries for 86 yard 2 years ago. Last season is when we broke out with our freshmens and sophomores who had more speed then the team WVU faced 2 years ago. Sad to say that it won't change next season. That will be a much better team then this year. I will be rooting for WV the rest of the season. Go Mountaineers!

USF beat WVU two years in a row - I would hardly call that a fluke. We could play the "if we didn't make so many mistakes" game all day long, but that's part of football.

I guess WVU fans just assumed that when Miami and Virginia Tech left, that their team would be able to dominate the Big East. Sorry to burst that bubble, folks.

Check your spelling.

And you completely missed the point. True sports fans support their teams in good times and bad. USF's night game against a ranked opponent was a hot Tampa ticket...but that single game doesn't make the University of South Florida a beacon of college football fandom.

Make sure you know what you're arguing.

(And by the way, the Citrus Bowl holds more than Raymond James. Not as quality a stadium, but more seating.)

I never said I thought it was a fluke. I just said WVU killed themselves. The Big East title isn't lost for WVU. It's a long year and USF,WVU, and Louisville will battle for it every year.

You USF fans are disgusting.... You sit here and trash UCF. You want to look at the facts? Let's look:

UCF:
Upcoming football team
New facilities
New stadium
One of the top football combined GPA's
Beautiful campus
Highly ranked in ALL majors
Produced NUMEROUS LEADERS in the NFL

USF:
CONVICTED Terrorist students
CONVICTED Terrorist Teachers
Students DYING of Airborne Illnesses
Upcoming football team
No football facilities
Rental stadium
One of the lowest football combined GPA's
Football players are MOSTLY CONVICTED FELONS
Almost ALL Football players have illegitimate CHILDREN
Nice campus
Moderately ranked in ALL majors
School located in the slums of Tampa
Produced ZERO LEADERS in the NFL

And you sit here and call UCF a bad school???
It proves your stupidity defines you.

Tell me when was the last time you saw west virginia held to 13 points?
Sept 2005 vs Syracuse when Pat White was the 2nd string QB, and Slaton was the 4th tailback on the depth chart. And actually they scored 15 in that game. It's been a long time since anybody has held down WVU the way USF did the past two years. I think Levitt has Rodriguez's number and that is saying something.
