I hate to say it but Charlie is simply too stupid to play the position in the NFL. You NEVER throw a lateral if your running back is out of position to catch a swing pass! Extremely poor clock management before the half! Bring back the Paul Brown quarterback IQ tests and lets get someone in there with something other than air between their ears!!

No no no.... my favorite is the play with 12 seconds left, no timeouts.... from the 5 yard line. Instead of throwing the ball away.... then getting in a field goal.... he RUNS it, UP THE MIDDLE AFTER A 5 STEP DROP.
Let me explain to you, Charlie, what you are up against..... 11 defenders.... in a 20 yard zone... and no blockers (cause you are effectively running a draw play now)... and you need to get TEN yards... UP THE MIDDLE. |

A couple of observations..... starting with bad... going to the good.
1) Frye - The mistakes he made were thoughtless. One, if you throw a swing pass and you even REMOTELY think it might have been backwards... you move your butt over and get in position to recover the ball or make a tackle. Better yet... you throw FORWARD and force your RB to move to the ball. TWO.... 12 seconds, no timeouts, and you're at the 5. You do NOT, EVER, do a 5 yard drop... and then try to run what is essentially a "draw" up the middle. The defenders are too tightly packed in at that point for one and two... IT IS A STUPID MOVE. Throw it away if no one is open and kick a field goal. THREE.... Frye's completion percentage wasn't bad... but he also got the snaps in better field position. IN THE END.... Frye performed miserably and DID NOT show himself the frontrunner. 2) Anderson - All I have to say here is... nice throws. Wish your recievers could HOLD ONTO THE BALL. Maybe he needs to take something off of it. Also, nice moves in the pocket and good presence of mind. That little dumpoff toss where he had a lineman coming up to him was awesome. And the little sidesteps to avoid the sack.... nice. He'd have posted better numbers had his WR's HELD ONTO THE BALL. 3) "Iron Hand WR Corps" - CATCH THE BALL PLEASE. Crennel.... you need to drag every single one of them out to the practice field and just work on their HANDS. Catch with the fingers... not with the palms! GEEZ. Poorest playing unit on the field.... bar none. 4) The O-LINE - They did not play badly at all. No line is impenetrable. They can do better though.... and I think they will as things move along. 5) Clifton Smith and Chris Barclay - NFL Europe products are shining. Smith wasn't as flashy but when he was in, he was zeroing in on the ball quickly. Barclay.... quick... good moves. Want to see more and see what else he can do. 6)Ortega - Another Miami TE!!!! Kid made some nice plays when they put him in. Physically looks a lot like Kellen Winslow. Seems to have reliable hands (better than the WR's anyways). We need to keep this kid around. Between him, Heiden, and WInslow.... we have GREAT DEPTH at TE. 7) Defense - Nice job guys. Held KC to 3 points offensively. Did their part and did it well. Not perfect.... but honestly.... they really look like they may be formidible! |

I agree with Bernie Kosar, give the quarterbacks some time. Only one preseason game and already the media is whining. Its a new offense and a new line and now the quarterbacks look to have more time to throw. That is something new a positive. I think it would help the quarterbacks to get some encouragement instead of the same old negative thinking.

I'm going to make a bold prediction - we're going to be the surprise of the NFL this year and we'll be 10-6. I was more pessimistic a couple of months ago, but I see an improved defense and offense with more depth. Even though we were 4-12 last year, we were in many of those games that we lost. Biggest question to me is the quarterback position. If Charlie Frye can cut out the stupid mental mistakes (especially in the 4th quarter), I think he'll be a decent QB in this league. Hopefully, Quinn will start shining in camp and push Frye for the starting job. If anything, it'll just make Frye better.

SAD! Thats all that could discribe the play of the two teams! Paul Brown,
just rolled over! |

"The running game totaled just 99 yards against the Chiefs."
Are you kidding me? How many games last year would we have loved 99 yards rushing. |

Wow..what a bunch of doom & gloomers. Except for 2 errors Frye did a great job. If that was Brady Quinn who went 12-15 for 122 yards and moved the team into the red zone 2 out of 3 times we would be having a parade down East 9th Street. Lets be realistic the Brady Quinn fans want Frye to "fail", which now that we have an offensive line that wont happen!
The Browns even went so far as to give Derrick Anderson extra reps during the game but things didnt go as smooth. Granted he had a few drops and some bad throws but for the most part the offense flowed with Frye at QB and was a rough under Anderson. The fact of the matter is Ken Dorsey performed better than Derrick. I've been listening to Bernie Kosar a lot since he's now an analyst and has been on several radio and talk shows. I figure he knows a lot more about football than we do. If anyone has noticed, Bernie has been giving subtle hints about Charlie Frye and how good he can be and not to count this kid out just yet. Now with an O' line in place we'll get a chance to see, objectively, the real Charlie Frye. Except for the 2 errors he had Saturday night Frye performed well and was on the same page as his recievers. This wasnt the Super Bowl, this was a preseason game. Lest we forget Peyton Manning has made tons of mistakes in preseason games. Bernie K. also mentioned he made lots bad decisions in preseason games. Thats what they are for. I've not heard any applause for several good throws and good split second decisions he did make. I think I'll listen to Bernie Kosar on this one and go with Frye as my QB. I think we'll be in for a pleasant surprise. And by the way Joe Theisman is a "hot dog" |

You OBVIOUSLY have your Charlie Frye colored sunglasses on again. Charlie FAILED behind a line that honestly DID A GOOD JOB. He only blew two plays you said? HOW MANY NEAR INTERCEPTIONS WERE THERE?!!!! You know what..... I am not even going to waste any more time replying to your obvious "Charlie Frye Public Relations Campaign". There are 3 more preseason games. I suggest your idol get his head screwed on straight and in a hurry. |

I stopped reading when I saw a Peyton Manning reference. Charlie Frye would be battling for a backup job anywhere else. He won't even be in the league in 3 years.

Truthfully how in the world can both you guys pass judgement on a player or players realistically that didnt have a chance to compete last year due to a poor offensive line. Do you remember that show "Run For Your Life"? Charlie Frye and Derrick Anderson were both convicted Felons last year as they were constantly being chased. Or is that how you judge the quality of our Quarterbacks????? Lets put Brady Quinn behind last years offensive line. How do you think he would have performed??? Probably not any better. But oh...I forgot...He's Brady Quinn. Hasn't won anything yet! Hasnt completed a pass yet! Hasnt scored a touchdown yet! But he went to Notre Dame and He's Brady Quinn and didnt even win any big games while there. Troy Aikman was massacred his first 2-3 years playing for the Cowboys. Did the Cowboys give up on him??? No!!!! You can disagree with my comments but I still say Bernie Kosar knows just a little bit more about football than we do. Frye is your boy!

That's true, Frye didn't have an offensive line. Neither did BQ at ND. Also, the ND defense was extremely poor, and there you have the reason ND lost the 6 games they did the last 2 years, wasn't because of Quinn.

mike in San Diego, I believe that 12 of 15 means only 3 incompletions. I didnt see the game, but I'm pretty sure that means that 3 passes were at worst near-picks. Unless every catch by our recievers was pulled from a db's hands, which is doubtful at best. What we have in your case is someone who is a first-round pick lover. Its ok, lots of head coaches suffer from this ailment as well. Look at Butch Davis. It doesnt mean you are right. I think ill go with someone who knows NFL quarterbacking like Bernie and give it some more time. Hell, we've given it this long, why not another week?

News for ya... this is his third year, and will prolly be a brown, possibly still the starter, going into camp in his 4th. |
