I think that Matt Barkley as the Player of the Year wasn't the best choice. First, he had an above average year statiscally. Second, his team wasn't the best in the Trinity League. Third, Mater Dei's early exit in the playoffs. Having seen him play and fade in big games (Carson, Orange Lutheran and Corona Centennial), I didn't feel he was the best choice.
Barkley and Matt Leinert have benefitted from great talent that surrounded them at Mater Dei and now at USC. Not taking anything away from Matt, But what happened to players like Preston King from Tesoro or Melvin Richardson from Long Beach Poly. These kids were major contributors to their programs, they are statiscally sound and they led their teams to the PAC- 5 championship game and state chamionship game (Richardson) as well. And neither appears on this list.
I don't envy the daunting challenge of narrowing down a list of very talented kids. And I wish them all success in their college careers.
