Personally I think the Jet talent is overrated and up until yesterday did not blame Mangini. I put all the blame on Tannenbau. I know there will be a lot of people coming around but I felt in August that the trade for Favre and then just letting Pennington go to a division rival was a sign of a dysfunctional front office. Now you could fairly argue perhaps in favor of Favre for Pennington, I disagree but how any other team would have allowed Pennington to go free agent and sign with a division rival is beyond me. And you guys in the press did not once second guess the stupidity of that. While working on the Favre thing, a competent front office would have been setting up contingency plans to trade Pennington out of the conference if at all possible and certainly not allow him to go to a division rival. Was this all Woody Johnson's idea so he could sell more PSL's as Favre became a mainstay in New York? You could see last January when Favre singlehandedly cost his team a chance to get to the Super Bowl the man was through. We also have to get to the bottom of just what role Mangini played in this. He didn't want Pennington from the start but Chad just kept beating out the other quarterbacks by a wide margin and Mangini was forced to play him but couldn't wait last year when the whole offensive line was decimated to get rid of him in favor of a qb who has shown no improvement whatsoever. And obviously that idiot Tannenbaum went along with this. But none of you guys ever questoned it when Tannenbaum claimed he had to let Pennington go by 4 PM the next day for salary cap reasons. And many of you guys kept telling the fans that Chad did not have the arm....BTW who has completed more passes over 20 yards this year, Chad or Favre. But I still read the same garbage coming from the sports writers...Chad couldn't do this..he couldn't do that but Brett Favre. The fact is the Jets do not have the receivers who can achieve separation down the field to make a gun slinger like Favre a threat. The Tennessee game, while a great victory, convinced Shanahan that you had to play the Jets the same way you played Pennington, 8 men in the box as Brett could no longer throw deep anyway and if he did, who was there to catch the ball? In other words, they had a Chad Pennington offense. Wouldn't it have been smarter to have Chad Pennington running it. But these same imbecilic fans who cheered when Chad hurt his ankle a couple of years ago against the Patriots (remember that) couldn't wait to get the "weak" armed Pennington out of here. And they all saw Favre as the savior. I know Mangini has had several bad games and Sunday's was by far the worst of all but the Jets' talent has been overrated by the sports writers and the fans. They are simply not a playoff team. And Tannenbaum's incompetence is one of the reasons. Now I have come around and do think Mangini has to go, for the play on the field but also for his inability to understand what Chad Pennington meant to this team. The man bled Jet green and never got one ounce of respect from Magini (similar to the way we were all sold a bill of goods a generation ago that Ken O'Brien was an incompetent quarterback and Browney Nagle or however his named was spelled would lead the Jets to a new era. Yes Bob, they all have to go. I do commend you as you were one of the few who suggested Pennington could have done just as well in the early going as Favre but tell me, who would you rather have qb of the Jets today? And when Favre leaves after this year, then you have nothing. Thanks a lot Tannenbaum and Mangini, you sure did a great job on this quarterback thing.

I have seen a lot in 30 years of being a jet fan. I have seen the 3 interceptions by Todd in the mud bowl. I have seen Idiot Gastineau kick away a 10-0 start in the playoffs in 86. Ive seen Kotite and all the rest. The way this season is ending is the worst one yet. These old free agents like Favre and Jenkins look tired now. What about our top draft pick? nevermind, no help there. When does this nightmare end?

It's not Mangini's fault, nor Shottenheimer's. Maybe not even Sutton's. The Favre trade killed this team's identity. Sure last year sucked. But the year before didn't. Did he forget how to coach? Doubt it. The 10-6 was a masterpiece of nobody being bigger than the team and everybody doing their jobs. Favre killed all that. The guy does what he does and wasn't going to be able to fit into a more complex system. A young coach like Mangini isnt equipped to handle Favre. The guy is beyond reproach and that doesnt work in Mangini's accountability nature. I was never convinced Mangini signed on to this deal. Nor possibly even Tannenbaum. It just never made sense. Was it Woody? The NFL? I dont know. Maybe Mannenbaum did lose their marbles for a second and thought this was a good idea. www.brettfavreblows.blogspot.com

Well said Jeff. Although, I think we differ slightly in our thoughts on Mangini's influence. I think Mangini would have loved to have benched Favre at some point, but his hands were tied. I dont think he wanted Favre. I'd love for someone high up to spill the beans on this

If you don't believe that the Jets have either adequate or good receivers, you haven't been paying attention. Do you believe that the Dolphins have better receivers with a quarterback who was assessed as being not good enough to win in New York?

He definitely won't be fired. He should be fired, but he'll be given a pass from Woody for this one.
Favre was always an experiment and I guarantee you there were indications made to the coach that if Favre doesn't have it anymore, you won't lose your job.
That's going to be his saving grace. I'm sure people are already convincing Woody that it's the QB and not the coach that brought this losing streak on.
The same people will point to the Tenn. game as Mangini at his finest.
Favre wasn't about winning a super bowl, he was about selling tickets and selling sizzle to a team that was devoid of sizzle.
The sizzle fizzled and Chad, who I loved as a Jet, will come in and pick apart this defense like a surgeon next week since the Jets still have no one who can rush a passer.
The other reason Mangini will be safe is the economy. The last thing Woody wants to do is eat the coaches salary and pay another big name coach more with huge guarantees right now.
It's cheaper to keep the same old regime.
Do I think Mangini is a good football coach? No.
Does he deserve to be fired? Yes.
Will he be fired? Absolutely not.
Unless the press calls for his head with the kind of venom reserved for Kotite, it's ain't happening.

If Miami does make the playoffs, they have no chance of winning the SB and next year Chad will have his normal odd year implosion.. The best thing about Brett Favre was getting Pennington out of here once and for all so we can finally aggressively address the position

Ohh, and Mangini should be fired without a question. This team has been listless since the TN game - that's 100% on coaching

i've been questioning the competency of the coaching staff all season long and i have to agree that missing the playoffs after starting out 8-3 is justification for firing mangini. and yes brett is done too.

The Jets are a bunch of chokers. They were talking a NY-NY Superbowl a few weeks ago....well a least the Giants are still a first rate team. Jets are done.

I think it also goes back to Woody Johnson and the almighty dollar. He named Tannenbaum GM, a cap specialist, and was instrumental in hiring Mangini, who only had one year as a coordinator under his belt. No doubt he didn't want pay for more experienced people with a track record.
Then, with the PSL's on the horizon and the team's prospects about exciting as watching paint dry, he brings in Favre. It worked, because he got his PSL money from the auction (I wonder how those people feel about there "investment" now).
Another thing that got lost in all of this was the development of Kellen Clemens. He's lost a year of development, the Jets don't know what they have (or not) and for what? A streak of a few weeks of excitement and the usual Jets letdown.
Mangini wants to be Belichick, but can't even be Belichick light. Get rid of Mangini and Tannenbaum, and bring in real football people. But that will not happen until all the PSL's are sold.
Thanks Woody.

Their opponents that year were a combined 95 - 113. They went 1-3 against teams with a winning record (beat NE), and 2-1 againts teams that were 8-8. They even lost to 4-12 Cleveland. Hardly a masterpiece.

Mangini is the white version of Herm Edwards. Its Time for Bill Cowher, or another real coach to coach this team. if not, we will not be able to compete with Miami or NE.

do I hear the quiet whisper of j-e-t-s going into the night. Thanks for Pennington, ya dummies. And not going for it on 4th and 1 on the 2 yard line in the first quarter and but going for it on 4 and 2 on your own 25 with time and time outs in a winter game? Mangini and staff really blow.

I agree 100%. I'm not an insider so I can't say for sure what went wrong, but it looks to me like Favre got old right before our eyes and the team quit on Mangini. If they do make the playoffs, which they don't deserve, they won't win anything. My wish is for the whole coaching staff to go along with Favre, Ellis & Law.
