Rice Owls win as UTEP Miners' comeback falls short

Full story: El Paso Times 15
This time, the UTEP football team may have dug a hole too deep. The Miners certainly did against Rice on Saturday, as a series of comebacks still left them on the short end of a 49-44 score for their seventh ... Full Story

That 3-3-5 defense has to go! It obviously is not working because teams like Rice are running and passing the ball at will! The only way it would work is if they had headhunters like the Brian Urlacker or Ray Lewis types on defense, which they cerainly do not. UTEP needs to go back to the basics like learning how to tackle, covering wide receivers, pursuing, etc and run a regular 4-3 defense. How can a team score 44 points in a game and lose? That defensive effort was just plain awful and sickening! I am certainly not buying season tickets next year!

So...let's start hearing the excuses. Come on you UTEP homers,i'm a fan,but I am brutally honest. Their defense has no clue what they're doing out there. Simple as that.

Two words: Dropped passes.

UTEP's defense never gets a stop when it has to. And every game it plays is a must-win. As a fan, it's exhausting. They will not win three of the next four.
Believe me, believers.

So just a couple of years ago Rice was thinking about getting rid of the football program. Pretty remarkable to be bowl eligible this quickly. It may be a horrible bowl, but anything is something.

I just love when UTEP loses in football to Rice. First because Rice is my alma mater, but also because I grew up in El Paso, go Thunderbirds! I just love when Natalicio's plan of emphasizing non-academics backfires. I hold on to hope that the students will demand more and get more from the "leadership" there.

At Rice we have a student newspaper that blasts the university, the president (leebron) regularly. The important fact is that the Rice Thresher is run by students, not controlled by the administration. It is supported, if not encouraged. The presidents get changed pretty regularly, not because they failed, but because changing administrations is good. Students can affect change.

For those that graduate from UTEP (2% in four years), you have to fight for the value of your degree. Not only while you're there, but continued. Natalicio has fought for her value. Her value is in construction and bringing in money (i.e. accepting 99% of applicants). What is UTEP afraid of? Natalicio is the best that can be had? 2% in four years is what to expect? I feel strongly about this because of family and friends that have attended. Has anyone looked at Natalicio's CV? How about the deans of the schools? Come on guys, fight for the value of your education. Your degree will follow you after your hard work has finished. I just can't get over it, 2% is just unacceptable anywhere.

Here's to hoping that Natalicio realizes that she has a responsibility to making utep more selective and providing resources to students so that they may graduate. She has not during her too long stay as mediocre president, so the choice is of the students, do you want UTEP to continue as it is or to advance into a new competitive environment. To have a president that is not at all interested with publications is telling. Why would she then emphasize the strengthening of a curriculum? It is so obvious, 20 years is enough. The students are as brilliant as anywhere else, but the name has to be put back together by the administration. They have failed brilliantly.

Anyway, next up for the owls is army. Might be able to get an eight win season. Is it getting cold in El Paso?

What is it this week Price, we still young, we gave the fans a fun game, & the best one is we still can have a good season by running the table. There's one problem talk is cheap you actually have to go on the field and do it, also i would like to see some of these practices and see how much crap these coaches tell the defense how great of a job they do in practice because when the game comes it looks like no practice is done. When is accountablity ever going to take substance until then i guess everyone is doing a great job and great effort and they are all a great bunch of kids, we dont need a coach to be our best friend we need results.

Yeah what a great big MINER disappointment. If I was a Miner I wouldn't be to proud. Nobody wants to be a looser. Get Price out of there and get a real Coach/Leader. Shut up Mike Price.

Coach Price keeps talking about how proud he is of his players, how much improved they are, and he really emphazises how much he needs fan support. Coach, get a clue, the UTEP football program is and has been in dire need of improvement for MANY years! As a fan, my family and I have stopped going to see a mediocre team (at best) play like a mediocre high-school team (no disrespect). Coach, you can plead all you want to us fans but until you start demanding better performance from your players and getting it, we wont be. Sounds like a broken record hu?

Like I said 2 weeks ago after Tulsa. Offenses win games. Defenses win Championships. Either Mr. Lewis Defense Scheme is not working, or simply these kids dont have the talent/heart to play it. I respect the offense and Trevor Vittatoe. If they dont improve this year and have already told myself to not get season tickets after 9 years. Tired of seeing the same crap.

Horrible program, plain and simple. At best this is a competitive Div-II program. Time to invest in Div-I men's baseball and soccer and bring some degree of pride to this school's athletic department. At least there is some home grown talent that could compete in those sports. Face it no high quality Div-I football player really wants to play here.

You're already dumb if you bought season tickets for this year!!
You're only fooling yourself.
Utep is what they are, and always have been with the exception of 3 above average seasons

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Quality players are not going to sign on with Taco Tech. Better be glad that Mike Price is gracing you with his presence. He could do a helluva lot better.

Well, you definitely can't be proud of your writing.

And how can anyone be proud of living on or near the Gulf Coast? You're all evacuees to me.
