Full story: Chicago Tribune

Gosh thanks Haugh, football 101, can you tell everyone something we don't know like why you even wrote that. Look we can all wiki cover 2 and get the same answer. What you just did is not even reporting, it's community college football 101. What, did you have an article do and couldn't think of a thing to write? so you hit wiki up, and then cut an pasted everything.

Nice three pages of garbage, did you talk about the defensive problems? Or the problems with the players? No you just rambled on generically about the cover 2. What was the point, you just showed zero insight into this team. I guess if your not blowing smoke up Lovie's backsige, this is all your good for. How on earth did you get a job as a reporter. Oh never mind I already answered my own question, your bosses backside must be smoked like a country ham by now.

Eh, I thought it was a fun read. Trivial but somewhat interesting.

Creighton, I'm going to assume that your occupation has nothing to do with children, the elderly, or small animals. Just an assumption.

Things are tense around these here parts because regardless of low expectations and a defense that can't stop a three-year old passer, rusher, or reciever, we have still put ourselves in a position to claw out a playoff berth.
That's what it's all about, right? Getting in...period. Expecting dominance on this defense is unrealistic. It ain't gonna happen. But we can ask them to play a little better can't we?
Is it possible that the Bears are incapable of playing at least a little better? Do we suck that bad?
Hello? Hello? Damn.

Obviously, he wasn't writing for your benefit. Me, I enjoyed it. And among sports writers I've come across, Haugh is among the most articulate around. I like his style. It's not bombastic, nor does he throw in puns and irrelevant references to pop culture in a desperate attempt at humor.

By the way, you really have to figure out the difference between when to use "you're" and when to use "your".

In the long term, I see Tillman sliding over to free safety, ala Troy Vincent/Bobby Taylor/Ronnie Lott.

Great,

Thanks for a more technical look @ the Bears cover-2. I've had to search for something like this, but this describes each player and his responsibility well.

Haugh has to be the best writer on this Sports staff. I learned a lot from this piece that I hadn't been able to pick up elsewhere. For example understanding the subtle differences between a nose tackle and defensive tackle in this scheme, awesome. Having never played competitive football, this really helped.
And as far as analysis of our starters, I thought it was both fair and accurate. After losing to Green Bay, the local media has disappointed me by simply piling on one or both of the coordinators and Tommie Harris.
Thank you Mr. Haugh for keeping perspective and performing your job with diligence and integrity.

Alright, Haugh, if I recall, did some columns in the South Bend Tribune when he worked there. I've only read a bit, but the guy has the cajones to say what's up. I know he's always holding back as to how had the bears are. Now that name-dropping downey got bought out or whaever it took to get the heinous dude outta here, please make Haugh a columnist. He's earned it.

Hey Haugh, or should I say Hee Haugh, you left out one small detail about the cover 2, it is obsolete. Ok, now go back to what ever it is you do. What do you call it? If it's not reporting, and not really a column (no independent point of view), would it be a feature story or puff piece? Forgive me I'm not very familiar with the trib sports pages anymore after canceling our subscription after 40 some years, mainly due to the decline of the sports section. Nice to be able to check online and reconfirm the decision to cancel.

i played semi-pro ball so i would put my knowledge of the game "up there" and i still enjoyed reading this article, i knew what the responsiblities of each position was but i still liked reading what his opinion was of the players we have in. isnt that why we read these mid/end week articles, for pre-game talk and thoughts on our players??? i guess goof named Creighton should just start his own paper up in skokie il, you can lay out the real dynamics of football that only you cooool guys know, go shove it up ur as dude, kids and less knowledgable fans read this paper not just ur A_hole buttt

Good article but all of that is meaningless if they are not motivated to play. When great players have consistantly mediocre performances, it means that they have lost respect for the coachs. Unless Lovie is paid off and fired we will have three more years of this,

Alignment: A bucket of doo-doo.
Cover-2 specs: Outdated defensive scheme that was figured out years ago.
Why Bears like their guy: They gotta say something.
Alternative: Go to the movies

I just heard that R.B Jones is on the inactive list today???? That makes alot of sense! What if Forte gets hurt? Jones should be getting more reps in the game anyways. To help Spell Forte some. You never have your #2 R.B as an inactive.Thats like having your #2 Q.B inactive! Go Bears!!

That is a good explanation of what the parts do and who does them. As a whole, however, the scheme itself works only works when pressure by the front 4 is generated. The scheme has "soft spots" that can be exploited (like the slant) if pressure is not generated. The Bears are not getting to the quarterback so the corners are getting beat. Another weakness is over-pursuing the quarterback leaves teams susceptible to the run, cut-back runners, and the draw. The problem has been entirely this year getting to the quarterback. You fix that without blitzing too much and the cover-2 works. The other solution is to play the Rams every week.
