Chicago Bears and Glenn Earl come to terms

Full story: Chicago Tribune

The Bears and Glenn Earl agreed to terms Friday on a one-year contract. The safety out of Notre Dame and Naperville North had a tryout during the team's three-day mini-camp. Earl hasn't played since the 2007 season with the Houston Texans , when he was injured in the last exhibition game against the Bears in a collision with Cedric Benson .

wow is this the best the bears can do th the bears signed an unknow safty that hasn't played for two years and expect him to back up the bears are got to be one of the cheapest teams in all 4 major sports in the united states i think thers a safeties called roy williams( pro bowler) and jermain phillips( not sure if he is still in the market) that are avaiable but we went in a cheap mood but lets face it the mangment sucks the owners suck big time and JA sucks the most of them all.

While I think this guy is a dope, there is a reason to NOT sign a lot of these free agents.

The Bears currently have six picks in the draft. But they could be eligible for another two due to their loss of Berrian, Gilmore, Ajenbedeyjo and others who signed elsewhere via compensation picks.

And seriously, when I look at the guys that have been on the market, I'm not much impressed.

Roy Williams? Serously? You could make a "how can a safety be this bad" tape from his footage.

And for the most part, everyone else has been old and washed up.

I really can't believe people are complaining when previous free agent/low pick deals brought the likes of Moose, R. Manning Jr., Archeleta, and Darwin Walker.

There is a reason these guys get let go.

Unless the player is A-list, you are just a better off waiting for post-draft cuts.

Wow. That's it? With 'Scarecrow'(if I only had a brain) Hester as #1 wide receiver, a 60 million dollar defense that can't stop anyone and an offensive line with more holes in it than a strainer, the 2009 season is shaping up into one ugly mother.

Comments from morons like Michael just show that too many"fans" don't know "ESPN-made" stars and stats. Earl was a 3 year starter at Notre Dame and a 2 year starter with the Texans (where our new secondary coach came from)where he incurred a serious injury that historically takes 2 years to completely recover from. I'm not saying he's the next Ronnie Lott and may not even make the team, but if you have any brains at all you'd have to say this is a very good signing for the Bears and the fact that it didn't cost a ton, leaves that much more freed up for other moves.

Can someone please tell JA that the Bears are not a rehab center for injured players? He is signing on players like it is.

Looking at the Houston newspaper sites, could not find any info on this guy. Does this mean he's our last option for Safety?

The Curse of Cedric Benson is alive and well. Since the collision with Urlacher and Mike Brown, Benson has gotten better, while Overhyped-Urlacher and Always Injured Brown are done.

Now we get another victim of Benson.

Great!!! Brilliant!!

Finally Cedric Benson contributes something to the Bears. Too bad he didn't hit any Left Tackles.

I am speechless. But I am not surprised. Another retread player. A backup player to support and starting backup player. Sounds familiar? The Bears want to make it easier for us to figure out why they suck. The trick for the fans would be to figure who will be the target for blame.....or maybe not.

I remember Glenn Earl from his college days at ND and he could be a very serviceable player assuming his foot injury is behind him.

Bob Davie while at ND found some decent players like Justin Tuck among others and Glenn Earl was a hard hitter at Safety and smart player for his three years there and he also has some NFL playing time from the Texans.

Never heard of him. Probably added as depth for camp and preseason.

I am still trying to figure out how and when Cedric Benson got better. When in takes you 40+ carries you had better be able to get 150 yds.

I actually don't mind this signing even though I, among many, have been extremely critical over the Bears' lack of anything this offseason. Earl wasn't a bad player up until his injuries. If he recovers and shows anything like he did a few years back he could be an excellent pickup. I actually have to give JA and the Bears credit on this one. Worst case scenario is it doesn't work, Earl walks after the year is over and you lost just a little bit of money.
