If Auburn has Alabama and Arizona has Arizona State, then who does Maryland have? Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen was asked before the season about the sort of in-state rivalry games that make players and fans ...

I used to love the West Virginia rivalry in years past. it was usually pretty heated and exciting, but they too have a bigger rivalry in Pitt.

The way we were playing earlier this year, after playing Delaware i thought maybe we had something there lol.
I think i can let that idea go. i can definitly live with beating ranked teams on a regular basis then having a legit rival!

Virginia certainly is a rival, the states have to put something on the line...some type of trophy if one team wins..and the governors and school presidents have to get involved. All I know, the Terps better now have a let down this week...beat this team like you know you can...oh and please get the ball more into Heyward-Bey's hands...he's much better (more explosive) than Derrick Williams of Penn State (even though Derrick has his best game of his career last weekend).

Shameful that MD and Penn do not play each and every year, home-away. Penn State, WVU, and VA should ALL be yearly games...The most "rivalry-like" would evenutally become clear.

So Maryland is looking for someone to hate them.

MD should keep Navy on the schedule. It is a more natural rival. close proximity, good fan base, local connections. Most of the examples cited VA-VA Tech, Clemson-SC are in-state.

Absolutely, if you want an awesome rivalry, there is none better than PSU-Maryland. I've never seen Maryland play better and harder than against PSU. Do it!

Agree that Maryland should have Navy on the schedule. Playing Penn State would be great, although our wins against them were very rare. I forget how many consecutive games we lost to them, but it was a bunch. If you want to elevate the program, having Penn State on the schedule is a step in the right direction.

So long as Md. wins who cares. The problems is all the schools in the ACC. The make up of the conf. has changed.

A rivalry needs to be two-way....meaning that fans of each team point to the other as their rival. Maryland just does not have it with anyone. Terps fans have often claimed that Carolina, Duke, or Virginia were the rivalries....rivals-YES, arch-rivals-NO.

Maryland needs to pursue an inter-state rivalry with a West Virginia (although, they have their 'backyard brawl with Pitt and a nice rivalry with in-state Marshall ) or Penn State (too one-sided ).

Could Maryland-Rutgers work? Since we are on interstate rivalries, how about Maryland-California (wait, I forgot Cal has that rivalry with Stanford).

Rivalries either have to have some history OR they need to heat up quickly with each team beating each other in heartbreakers year over year. You just can't point a finger.

If only it were that simple. The Penn State series lasted a long time, but the Big Ten thing screwed it up. WVU will be back and that has been a great rivalry.

I have been saying for several years that it is disgraceful that MD and Navy have not met every year since the beginning. These are the only two Div 1A (or whatever they are calling it now) schools in the state and they should play every year. The fact that they have almost no history on the gridiron together is downright pathetic and due to decades of stubborness on both sides.

MD-Navy would sell out every freaking year no matter what. You don't need a PhD in marketing to know that.

Enough Delawares, E Michs and Middle Tennessees - give the fans some real non-conference rivalries for crying out loud!

Make the deals with the right schools or buy back my season tickets.

umm...I believe the Terps lost the Penn St. game for 28 straight years - except for the tie at Memorial Stadium in 1989

Prediction:

Virginia -- 27
Maryland -- 10

Maryland will finish with a 5-7 record.

I am happy that Maryland is no longer recruiting Tavon Austin.

Jelani Jenkins, Travis Hawkins and Isaac Holmes will be signing with the University of Florida.

Go Tar Heels !

The UMD-Pa State game could be called the Mason-Dixon Line Bowl.

Hey Gary...where did you hear MD is not recruiting Tavon Austin? Just like you said awhile ago on the Washington Post that UMD was not recruiting Darius H.B...and he is now a Terp. Do you like to start fake rumors so you can believe they are true? You're an idiot.

Sorry, Ralph: UVa's "out-of-state" rivalry game would be UNC-- one of the South's oldest, starting in 1892 and the two schools have played annually since 1919. Like any real rivalry, it is also a competitive one-- the all time series barely tips in UNC's favor, 56-52-4, although recent UVa domination has closed the gap considerably, unlike say the so-called UM-PSU "rivalry", where save the Dick Shiner miracle of 1961(the UM QB from Lebanon, PA) and the memorable 13-13 tie in Baltimore in 1989 (thanks, again, PA-native and then UM head coach Joe Krivak), Penn State has won 'em all.

The only in-state rivalry that makes sense is Maryland vs. Navy. It would sell out every year and they should play it at M&T a pseudo-neutral location, although Navy plays there every other year against Notre Dame. It would be the perfect location for the annual duel at the harbor, or the Crabcake bowl, or many other catchy names that could be developed.

However, in terms of a natural ACC inter-state rivalry, most recently that has been with Wake Forest, whose games have matter and been close back and forth the last several years. UM can't claim UNC because their battle is with NC State, then DUke, and then Wake in terms of rivalries and Wake has a first in-state rivalry with UNC then their closest geographic rival is Va Tech.
I would much rather see Maryland develop an in-state annual rivalry game played not in late november like many "rival" games, but in mid-october or early in the season, put that game in place of the games the likes of Middle Tennesse or Eastern Michigan.

Actually the Maryland/Navy game when played has always been refered to as the Crab Bowl.

Maryland and Virginia used to play for the Tydings Trophy in the 20's through the 40's. It was last awarded in 1945 after which the teams didn't play for eleven years. They just forgot to keep up the tradition.
