Super Bowl XLV: Comparing The Injured Packers To The Colts

There are 1 comment on the Stampede Blue story from Jan 24, 2011, titled Super Bowl XLV: Comparing The Injured Packers To The Colts. In it, Stampede Blue reports that:

When we saw a completely healthy Colts team take on a completely healthy Packers team in the third pre-season game in August 2010, it was clear that the Packers were very good and the Colts were very, very flawed.

This guy is actually trying to compare the Green Bay draft picks (which are generally in the mid-teen first round) to the Colts picks (which are 30th in the first round to 2nd round picks). Ridiculous.

Green Bay's first pick since '06:
(2006) A.J. Hawk - 5th overall
(2007) Justin Harrell - 16th overall
(2008) Jordy Nelson - 2nd round
(2009) B.J. Raji - 9th overall
(2009) Clay Mathews - 26th overall
(2010) Bryan Bulaga - 23rd overall

Now, look at the positions of the Colts' draft picks:
(2006) Joseph Addai - 30th overall
(2007) Anthony Gonzalez - 32nd overall
(2007) Tony Ugoh - 2nd round
(2008) Mike Pollack - 2nd round
(2009) Donald Brown - 27th overall
(2010) Jerry Hughes - 31st overall

Because the Colts finish so high in the standings every year, they wind up with very low first round picks. How are you going to compare the effectiveness of a team that drafts in the top ten of the first round, with a team that drafts in the last 2-3 of the first round, or the last 2-3 of the second round. Of course GB's picks will do better. They're much higher draft picks. They're SUPPOSED to.

And, of the group that Polian drafted, only 1 can be considered a bust. That is Tony Ugoh.

Addai has been one of the best backs in the league his entire career.

Anthony Gonzalez was one of the best WRs in the league until he tore up his knee running a route during a game in '09. I guess the author of this article believes Polian is responsible for that. The one full year Gonzalez did play he was the third leading receiver behind Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. Not bad company.

Mike Pollak was drafted to backup up Saturday at Center (which was his All-American position in college), but was used to fill the void left by the poor play of LT Tony Ugoh. He had to learn a completely different position than he had been playing for the last ten years. It didn't help that the Colts have one of the most complex offenses in the NFL. Pollak is now a solid OL contributor.

Donald Brown was a consensus All-American his senior year in college when he lead the nation in rushing yards with over 2000 yards and 6ypc. He was considered one of the top 3 RBs in the draft and was drafted by a Colts team that could not run the ball. We all soon found out that the Colts poor rushing stats were because of the OL, not the RBs. Brown is going to do great things.

Jerry Hughes was twice a consensus All-American in college, and the Lott Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award winner in '09. He wasn't expected to play very much his ROOKIE SEASON, and he didn't. The Colts expect big things from him next year.

This entire article is a waste of print.
