Chicago Bears' Devin Hester must show progress quickly

There are 118 comments on the Chicago Tribune story from Mar 20, 2009, titled Chicago Bears' Devin Hester must show progress quickly. In it, Chicago Tribune reports that:

Watching Devin Hester run past defenders in minicamp this week made it easy to forget that his move to full-time wide receiver last season clearly was a failure if viewed within the context of a one-year vacuum.

Rex will be signed after the draft.
Yeah, exactly what I've been saying!!

Why?(a) Angelo will get him on the cheap,(b) management will say "Rex knows the offense" which is double-speak for "Rex will not embarrass Turner the way that Griese did, and (c) Angelo just can't give Rexie up!!("Brokeback Halas Hall").

ick!!!

LOL... OTIS! I didn't say he would be picked up by the Bears...although...if he isn;t we will be seeing Caleb Hanie at QB very soon. Talk about ick...(no offense to Caleb, heck, I'd like to see what he can really do).

People.
Devin Hester is a CB, he was drafted as a CB........not a WR.....sorry.
Became an elite WR takes years of training, not to say the phisicall skills required.
Hester is agreat atlete, he maybe, just maybe, will be a good slot receiver, not more than that, and it may be just what we need from him.
I love the Bears, I always do, but insisting in Devin Hester as a #1 WR is a mistake.
This is the best coaching staff in the NFL. They can take any guy off the street and teach him how not to catch a football.

You are now an expert?
Does the BEARS know you are an expert on their personnel? Gee instead of posting on a blog you should be running the BEARS.

Gee I am honored to be in the presence of greatness.

Any more Pearls of wisdom?

If it was up to the fans. Most of the Receivers on the teams they root for; that are playing that position today would still be return men for Pete's sake.

Some people never want to see anybody have a chance at stardom doing something else.

Hester does have the potential to be a VERY GOOD receiver. IF HE HAD A QB THAT COULD ACTUALLY PASS THE BALL ACCURATELY, MORE THAN 30 YARDS DOWNFIELD.

The Truth hurts doesn't it?

Orton can't throw deep, man did you ever watch him play while he was at Purdue? He lit up the sky! Before you make such dumb coments check out what he done. Orton would have 60% completion if his recievers wouldn't have dropped balls that hit them in the chest.

Yup! The guy CAN heave it, but to who? Here's his stats:

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players...

It shows steady improvement during his time in the NFL. More touchdowns than interceptions, unlike Wrecks!!

If Orton gets some help at WR, and a bit of O-Line protection, I hope he shows the stuff he did last season (before the high ankle sprain). If not, bring Caleb in!!

FUGGIT, GO BEARS!!

Otis, does this mean you are turning down the guitar spot on my "Anyone But Orton" world tour?

LOL!! I was gonna offer you the guitar chair on the "ANYONE BUT GROSSMAN" tour!! Hell I've already booked venues!!

I'm willing to see what Orton does in camp vs. Hanie. Orton is about the best we are likely to get, since this Bears coaching staff is so averse to being embarrassed by upstarts like Cutler.

Remember what Griese did to Turner? haw haw haw!!

However, I fully expect Grossman to be re-signed by the Bears on a minimum deal since he "knows the offense." Watch for it! I can't find ANY signs of interest by the NFL for the guy!

OK, I'll take it but we have to play the Kansas version of the Super Bowl Shuffle, not the original version.

Trade Hester for anything in the draft you can get.He has shot the load, this coaching staff messed with the kids head. The best return man the NFL had after Red Grange and they screwed it up.

"According to Stats, Inc., Hester was thrown to 91 times but he caught only 56 percent of those passes. By comparison, Carolina's Steve Smith, the player with whom Hester often is compared, caught 60.5 percent of the passes thrown to him."

So if DH would have matched Steve Smith's percentage, that would have resulted in a grand total of 4 additional catches for the season - not a compelling stat.(91x56%=51; 91x60.5%=55)

Article is trying to compare statistics of probowl wr with 6rs experience to hester currently in second full season at wideout. go look at Steve Smith # in his first two seasons hester actually has slight edge with more receptions and more td. smiths breakout came in year 3 of his switch this will be yr 3 for hester. Im sure their were the same questions about Smith after his first 2 year experiment at wideout.

The Truth hurts plenty. Orton also might have a chance to throw deeper if he had the time to set up and heave it. Having our "ole!" offensive line isn't a good starting point.

He would've had more big plays if Orton threw a better deep ball!

Truth be told, the Bears shot themselves in the foot when they let their #1 and #2 receivers walk, and thought they could turn a punt/kick-off guy into a #1 receiver, and get by with a bunch of re-thread WR's.

The 3 searing memories I have in my head of the Bears recievers are; 1. Muhammed leaning over and telling Hester the plays and corect formation. 2. Olson turning over the ball on 2 passes against Carolina. 3. Davis dropping pass after pass after pass.

It's time for the Bears to upgrade the WR position. NO MORE RE-threads has-beens or experiments.

BTW it was stated that Bennet had a hard time grasping the playbook last year. That's why he didn't see much action.
