Bears concentrating on their own issues

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Lovie Smith almost got ahead of himself. The Bears' coach pondered whether 10 victories would be enough to slide his 8-6 team into the playoffs.

Instead of endless criticism and commentary, how about someone on your staff lay out the Bears' wild card prospects. Seems to me that the 2nd wild card is still an option, tho nobody on the Trib staff has bothered to print conference records and head to head records for the 8-5 teams in your useless sports stats section.

While the Bears chances to make the playoffs are slim, I am happy that we can actually think they have a chance. I did not think that they would win more than 5 games this year with all the turnover on offense from the last two years. If they could add a couple of decent receivers next year, they can be a very good team for several years. I'm still proud to be a fan of the team that leads the NFL in all-time wins and most players in the Football HOF.

We all know the Vikings have to lose, And we all know that the Cardinals can do it! Hell the only reason they left Chicago was because of the Bears. This towns is not a 2 football town and never will be! We have a game next Monday thats or should be a Pay back game, Hell they have beaten us in 3 yrs so how was it so easy this time? I think it was the Lovie & BoBo the clown show! All I want to say is toughen up Chicago Bears on that D-line and Orton maybe Air it out some ! Do you really have to use the play there sending in to you? Take control Kid and show use your CocoNutz

Very unlikely that they will be in the playoffs and if they are that they get beyond the first playoff game. After all they will be going up against real football teams.

So whose fault is that? The owners. The general manager's. The coaching staff's.

Overall it's a mediocre team. Defense, offensive line, backfield, quarterback, special teams, all mediocre.

Chicago is not a 2 football team town? True. It isn't even a one football team town. Unless you count Northwestern.

Yes, the Bears could go to the play offs, and I could be named to the vacant Senate seat. Could happen!

Lovie!!! I'm still trying to get over the fact he blew a field goal call against the Vikings that, in all likelyhood, contiributed to them losing the game. ALWAYS, ALWAYS take the points. If you can't get across the goal line in three tries from the one you had better at least get the three. It is enough of an emotional boost to the defense they stopped your BIG scoring effort, but don't let them know they OWN your assets!! Sure they beat N.O. in the cold, and looked shakey doing it. So they may get lucky and make the playoffs. But from the second game of this season on there have been so many unintelligent coaching decisions, and from time to time lapses in concentration on the field, I would be stunned if they got past the first round. Seems to me as if EVERYONE on that team has lost their focus throughout the season. Tillman has reverted to the d.back he was two years ago, lousy. Thank goodness they got lucky with Forte. We know they didn't pick him because Angelo was any good as a manager.

Me and you both. When i was down there in Bourbonnais this year, i thought, same as you, that this was a 5 win team, at best! Glad to be wrong.

I didn't have a problem with the Bears going for it. I had a problem with the Bears not getting the 1 yard. If it was 2 or more yards then yes kick the field goal. Teams that are good enough to win big games convert on short yardage situation. I think we need a short yardage specialist that will hammer and bruise his way for the score next season.

I think it's foolish to think about the rest of the season at this point. My main focus is on this week only. A Bears win which we got and a Vikings loss. That's it. Football is alot more enjoyable when you are thinking at the moment.

I thought 6-10 was a good goal for this team and they already over-achieved, but I fear that a poorly managed end-game at Atlanta and a poorly-time penalty against Tampa Bay are the two things that will keep this team out of the playoffs.
The most likely scenario is that the Bears and Vikings end up tied at the end of the year and the Vikes apparently have the tie-breaker.
Rocket Man is correct that the Bears need a reciever or two but I really think they need a secondary, some DBs and corners would be good. Had the Bears a decent secondary we wouldn't even need to be worried about the playoffs now and just worry about who we would play.
As someone said, though, whomever gets in to the playoffs from this sorry division is just going to get beat by a superior team.
Finally, Even though the records of the teams playing the Vikings looks daunting on paper, the Cardinals have already clinched their division so they will not be as hungry as Minnesota and also, I think they only have 1 win outside their sorry division which is worse than ours. Giants too have clinched and will probably rest allot of guys on the final game of the season.

Put it to you this way. There will be a lot of disappointment when we recieve our last lost this year. I wait for that to happen. As far as this week goes should Arizona win this Sunday I know Bears fan that will be happy being tied for first next week. How many of us thought that the Bears would even be in first going into week 15? I didn't. I was looking at a 6-10 season at the start.

I agree with all the posters about the Bears overachieving this year. i too picked them to get 6 wins. It is difficult to be a lifeling Bears fan this year. i always want my team to make the playoffs; but if they do, i a afraid of a first round embarassment, and also afraid that management might start believing we have something to build on. Other than forte, the entire offense needs to be re-staffed and the system revamped.

You really think a team like Tampa, Atlanta or Dallas coming in to Chicago in January would "embarrass" the Bears? I think the Bears would probably win or play them close at least. Unfortunately they won't get a chance - the teams playing the Vikings don't have incentive to win other than maybe Atlanta.

StratMaster, you have the significant truth of this matter, for what fan doesn't want to see his team win, no matter what, right?

But the reality is that if this team makes the playoffs and doesn't get totally embarrassed management will likely not harshly evaluate itself and may not make some hard and necessary changes next year.

Although I think Orton "gets the job done" this team needs to keep looking.

I think the Bears will be prepared for GB and Lovie is right to worry only about that. Defense is playing better lately and Anthony Adams is showing strong effort that seems to motivate his team mates.

Hello Fellow Bear Fans: I agree with most everyone as well.I am always over confident & always believe the Bears can win.I thought the Bears would go 10-6 this year & win the division. They can still do this & I Believe! I understood everyones thinking that the Bears would only win 3-5 games this year. But I thought our Defense would be one of the best(last year all the injuries decimated us). Also I really liked Forte out of college & felt he would do well.I also felt good about Orton being able to manage us with less turnovers.I didnt think we would have to score much to win games, with our Defense.I liked Tait going back to his normal position & I like St.Clair.I felt that Hester would break out on Offense this year.We also have two very good tight ends.I also thought our Special teams would remain tops in the league.Last I liked our schedule.Plus the fact our division opposition was weak.So I thought 10-6 was possible before the season.Nothing has gone like I thought it would though! The Defense underperformed & the offense was a pleasant Surprise!! We actually could be 10-4 right now. With those two close losses to the Top teams in the N.F.C. We actually could be 11-3! Carolina,Tampa & Atlanta were all very close losses(top 3 teams in the nfc).Anyways the Bears have overachieved and done pretty well this year.Lovie has made some mistakes as everyone does. But he has done well, and had the team overachieving for him.Thats the sign of a good coach,to get more out of players sometimes.I am disappointed in Turner and Babich though!I am Pumped up and Excited, although I usually always am.I feel good about us winning the Division.I think the Vikings will lose 2 of 3 or maybe all 3.They have tough games left & they arent that good.Hopefully Karma will make things right(on fighting suspensions)! We get 10 days before our last 2 games which is nice.We can rest up & practice alot more.We really need Orton to settle down & get Confident again! Forte is a Hero! I am proud of his efforts for us he really has the whole package. Not only does he do it all,but he does it all well.Sorry to ramble on,but I always seem to! I love my Bears and cant shut up! Take Care Everyone! God Bless! BEAR DOWN!! GO BEARS,2008 DIVISION CHAMPS!! WE BELIEVE!!

Embarrass the Bears ? Do you remember that we barely lost to Tampa this year.We actually should have won that game. Our Defense is finally clicking and playing well.I am not saying we would win,but we certainly wouldnt be embarrassed. Why are so many Fans talking about not wanting to make the playoffs? Just because we Might lose or lose Big?? I cant believe I am hearing it! Thats every teams goal is to win your division get to the playoffs and win a Super bowl.Anything can happen on any given Sunday! I want my Bears to make the playoffs! I want to Win! We have shown the ability to play with good teams. We Barely lost to the top teams in the NFC in Tampa,Carolina & Atlanta.Next time we might Win those match ups.Why be a fan if you dont Believe or support your team to Win,or Rally them on.Theres always a chance of winning or losing in the game.Thats why you play the games! I am not directing this at anyone in particular.I am just talking in general, from things I am hearing from some fans. Why wouldnt you want to make the playoffs, regardless of the outcome, which no one can Predict?? Lets cheer our Bears on,lets go Bear Fans.We are the best Fans in Football.Take Care! BEAR DOWN! GO BEARS,2008 DIVISION CHAMPS!! WE BELIEVE!!

I posted on another board that it is a tough year for me to be a lifelong Bears fan. I always want them to make the playoffs, but I am a little afraid if they do management will give the offense a pass (pun intended). With the exception of forte and tight ends, our Offense, from coordinator on down needs to be re-staffed, along with revamping the offensive scheme.

As far as being embarassed, Kyle Orton has played two horrible games out of his last 3, includig against a defense like the Saints. He has yet to have a strong performance against a decent defense. We have no WR's. Perhaps you didn't watch the Green Bay game, or maybe you think the fortunate ways we scored on Thursday will happen every game? If your offense is tha bad going into the playoffs, prepare to be embarassed.

This team needs more than a couple of good receivers to be a "very good" team next year! It needs Depth at both Offensive and Defensive lines, Defensive Backfield, an additional option at QB. Because lets face it Orton is serviceable but not the kind of QB that can engineer a 2 score or more come from behind win.

Not to mention better preparation in training camp. This incarnation seems to run out of gas early in the 3rd qtr and at times can hardly sustain itself in the 4th qtr. Also the coaching staff needs to learn how to make adjustments during a game, along with the need of better preparation of a game plan and play calling. Not to say afterward "we should of done this or we should of done that" (a fools mantra), Hindsight is 20/20.

The need to work on the basics of Football would not be a bad idea either, as a lot of bad mistakes are made on the basics during a game.
