Our next 3 opponents are pretty tough, so no matter which game he is handed the reins in, it won't be a walk in the park. I really think he would do well if they let him start next week even though he didn't play against Green Bay.

I expect that Russell will get more playing time. The handling of Russell should be strictly focused on his development as a NFL QB, with not only learning the playbook, but also minimizing turnovers and reading defenses, including dealing with blitzes. I hope that Kiffin gives Walter playing time, also. Teams need starters and backups at every position including QB, especially QB.[I'd also like to ask the John Madden/Art Shell personna to abandon his "Why do the Raiders Suck?" topic, since the Raiders are now rebuilding in a good way. Obviously, he'd get more responses if he didn't resuscitate the cheap shot topic heading. He has some good input, and it doesn't need to be under that topic.]

When should Russell start? I belive the key is winning. If the Raider-brass wants to win, then they should not start Russell. If the Raiders want to win next season and possibly make the playoffs, they should be playing Russell as much as possible. I believe they should be playing Russell now. Why? Because when the Raiders play a team that can shut-down the run like the Packers (not defend like Chiefs and Broncos), they are left to rely on the passing game. It's fairly obvious that the passing game is not there. Why? some of it is the WRs, but most of it is the lack of accurate QB throws and basic throwing schemes. Bottom line, the Raiders coaches need to learn how to be successful at throwing the ball. It makes no sense to continue to utlize Culpepper and McCown who will not (and should not) be with the team next year. The Raiders face the Colt and Jags, two good run defensive teams. This is a good opportunity to take a step forward with your QB of the future and improve the passing game for next year. They really need to find out what Russell can an cannot do. At the very least, they should consider starting Russell the second half of the Colts game and be the starter the rest of the season. As far as I am concerned, the Raiders should keep Walter as the back-up the remainder of this year and next year. He is more accurate than McCown or Culpepper, has a strong arm and most importantly, he has shown he can a beating and stay healthy. Russell will get injured. They can acquire a #3 in the off-season.
