Inman: No one way to memorialize teammates
THE NO. 34 jersey of late pitcher Nick Adenhart hangs alone in a locker at the far corner of the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse here at the Coliseum.

This has always been a touchy subject to me because different people deal with death differently. Should a player's number be retired because he died while on the team? No, but I do believe that is is a sign of respect to temporarily retire his/her number for the remainder of the season and the following season at most as a sign of respect. I've never heard of leaving his locker as if he were still part of the team, but that should only go on for the remainder of the season at most. Now I do believe that the team should make a team memorial and place it at the site where he passed on or on his grave. In Cooper's case, I'd have each member of the team (as well as former members that were teammates of his) write something special about him and then put them all in a bottle with his name, number, and the team name on it and cast it off at sea where he was lost at. When you let it go on too long, it eventually becomes a distraction to some people and makes it hard for them to move forward. Another question that comes up alot is Would he/she still be part of the team had he/she not passed away? We will never know, but we do know that their time on earth is done and it's time to move forward.

I agree that a memorial of sorts for the season is a healthy thing....but I also think everyone including players deal with it differently....some don't want the constant reminder...it affects everyone differently....for example in NC it is popular to put an in memory of sticker in the window of your car when someone close to you dies....I would never do that....but I don't fault those who do it....I just don't want that constant reminder....plus then what do you do when you sell the car....scrap it off??? kind of like putting a memorial stone or statue on the stadium grounds....do you move it when we move to a new stadium? even though the player didn't play there?....again I am not sure there is a right answer.....I think it should be a team/organization vote....the other issue is....what do you do if its a star player? do you do more for them than a role player?.....touchy touchy touchy....
