Nice Idea. It is sad to say that I agree with your logic. I am not much for trading for draft picks as the Bears need immediate help before the defense ages too much. Maybe swap Hester for a player like Chad Johnson. That would be a win/win and Hester would be out of the conference. We would still need to address other offensive positions, but at least a pro bowl receiver would be a step in the right direction. Im game.

Consider this: Teams have learned how to stop Hester. They just don't kick to him or they aim right for the sidelines. Hester has about 4 seconds of running time...if he makes it past that, he's gone. If he's touched within that 4 seconds, well, he's roadkill. He has a skill, I'll admit that, but he's still green to the game and needs to "take it like a man." He can play 2 more years and THEN ask for the big bucks. He can also ask NOW for a raise and not act like a child who doesn't want to eat his vegetables at dinner.
Hester needs to learn how to curb his hubris before he earns more money.

Trades like the Hershal Walker one, really don't happen any more. I would be surprised if anyone out there would provide anything remotely close to his value with the team.

I see where your going with on the trade idea Pompei but I have to disagree. Hester like you said, is a player that has no comparison in the return game. Losing a player as unique as Hester no matter what we got in return would be a travesty. Hester is one of the few, YOUNG, championship caliber players the Bears have. I couldn't ever trade him if I was JA. He is a potential Hall of Fame player. It's usually bad business to trade those.

I call you crazy. And the idea of trading Hester after a two day hold out is lunacy.

you are not crazy, you are just plain dumb!! Only in Chicago would a idiot reporter want to trade the most important player on the team and at the same time reward a guy who has four years left on a contract and his skills has eroded, only in chicago with some of the most spineless reporters in the counrty.

I disagree, trade him, trade him trade him. Do you know what kind of value he is, and he hasn't proved anything. Not to mention, he looks like he could be a head case. I am will to put money down, that he doesn't have a single TD return this year, and is a middle of the pack receiver.

Dan,
Good luck on getting alot of response on your column and with the message board. What other idea's for Bears columns have you dreamed up over the off-season. Again this could have been dreamed up by a couple kids while kicking a can on the way to school.

The Bears said in the last draft that they didn't want first round picks as they don't want to pay first round pick salaries either.
The Bears are a money source for the Halas family. They are not in it for fun or ego, they are simply trying to eek out as much money for themselves as possible. They cannot financially compete with other teams owned by zillionaires who believe the team is their toy.
I have no idea why they renegotiated all those other contracts and are drawing the line here.
D'Angelo is a poor judge of talent. You would just give him that many more expensive picks to screw up

Trade Hester for an unknown/unproven pick?? No way! He is pouting a bit, but then again, why does a dog lick his balls?? Because he can.

I didn't know that Dan Pompei was trying to steal the crown from Jay Moronatti, as the biggest joke of a sports writer in Chicago. If he is serious, then congratulations Dan, you win.

The idea is good, but no one would offer the draft picks suggested for a return guy who can be neutralized by simply kicking away from him. If they could get a 1 and two 2s I would do the deal.

Hester for Favre. Who wouldn't be happy?

Remember this, getting draft picks for Hester would not resolve any offensive issues. Remember who makes the picks for the Bears. So any additional draft picks that you could get for Hester, would only mean more DT, more DE, more defensive players. Oh yeah, then in the 4th or 5th round, Angelo would muddy up and pick a no-body for the "O", and tell you they are as good as Rex and Cedric.
