Adding guard Buenning helps Bears, but isn't enough

Full story: ChicagoSports.com

The Bears added depth on the offensive line Tuesday via a trade, but that might not be enough Sunday night to slow down Indianapolis pass-rush specialist Dwight Freeney.

The only way the Bears can make the game competitive on Sunday night is if they can run the ball, control the clock, win the turnover battle, and get a big play or two from special teams. Even if all of these come true, they will still have a very difficult time winning at Indy. New stadium, Peyton Manning, swarming Colt defense, Peyton Manning, Joseph Addai, Peyton Manning, kicking away from Hester, Peyton Manning, Dwight Freeney, oh did I mention Peyton Manning?, etc. will make it an extrememly tough first game. It will be almost as tough to watch as the sputtering Cubs.

well, i can't say the bears are cheap...but i can say they're stupid. all i hear from the "don't sign anderson" people are that he is too expensive. but hey, listen up...would you rather have a basement bargain guy that sucks...or an overpaid lineman that helps solidify an extremely shaky line? i'd prefer the latter. nobody can get bargain after bargain after bargain. and do you really think hester will be worth his contract this year? do you think urlacher will be overpaid when he's in the last years of that extension? at times, you HAVE to overpay. but sometimes you overpay because you suck at drafting and you can't scout the necessary guys that are in the bargain bin...so you have to break out the wallet to get talent to make up for your mistakes.

love the freeney talk. he'll dominate unless he's supremely injured. live in indy and i've seen the guy dominate inferior opponents. you get an ACTUAL left tackle...and he's history and gets shutdown the entire game, run AND pass. forte should just line up at LT because if he's pass blocking...thats the guy he'll be lookin' at most of the game. good luck kyle...

Nice try Jerry.... This guy may provide depth, but is he an impact player? I mean, he lost his starting spot in Tampa, right? Look... Call Anderson and let him know not many teams are going to be willing to pay that much money. He might as well come to a team where starting him is a no brainer and he'll get plenty of playing time. He is a must sign for the Bears at this point. He will help sure up the line and give the fans something to be hopeful about. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry,.... Do the right thing.

GO BEARS!!!!! 2008 NFC NORTH CHAMPIONS!!!!!

Finally, a young, big O-lineman that's mobile, strong, and aggressive. Great! I'll take Dan Buenning (Univ. of Wisconsin and lifelong Packers fan) for my team. Though, I think Breunning's acquisition may just be Jerry Angelo's way of 'throwing a bone' to Bears fans.

Buenning became expendable when Tampa Bay reacquired C Seam Mahan from Pittsburgh for an undisclosed draft pick; which will probably be the 6th-round pick Tampa Bay traded the Bears for Brian Griese and the Bears traded back for Buenning.

Mahan (Notre Dame) started 16 games at C for the Steelers, after signing a 5-yr.,$17m contract and then lost his position to Justin Hartwig. Mahan played four seasons in Tampa Bay-one year along side Breunning
Breunning started (16) games at LG for Tampa in '06,(7) in '07 before his ACL injury, and was competing for a backup position at OG/C this pre-season. And, Breunning is one of (4) rookies to start for Tampa at LG in the fourth straight year.

I watched him play at Wisconsin and he was solid. Buenning played on a Badgers line with Cleveland first-round pick OT Joe Thomas and C Donovan Raiola (Detroit's Dominic Raiola's little brother). Raiola was recently cut by St.Louis and hopefully Raiola is on the Bears radar as well

Buenning may have missed last year with an ACL injury, but, what football player doesn't have that injury anymore. And, medical technology and rehab today is a lot better than it was when Dennis Lick and Dick Butkus played in the NFL. He had surgery over 1 1/2 years ago and that's the new timeframe for ACL recovery.

We just might have another steal like we did with Roberto Garza,. Though, Garza needs to 'turn it up a notch' and start being more aggressive and smart on the field.

Does the acquistion of Buenning mean the end of the Terrence Metcalf era in Chicago? Let's hope so.

Will the Bears put the 'injury-prone' Metcalf on IR now or waive him and give him an injury settlement

It does make Metcalf more expendable. That's just making room for one more signing. Hopefully it will be Anderson. Then we can release Metcalf or Barton. Barton has not impressed in the preseason either. At least Metcalf has some experience.

Barton has not impressed ???

I must have been watching somebody else cause from what I have seen out of bartin and Balough makes me beleive that Angelo found a couple of quality OT"s in time once they fully develop.

Metcalf doea have some experience unfortunatly for Rex and Brian Greise he has more experience collecting tolls from defenders passing through his turn style. He also is very adept at tripping D-lineman while laying on his back...

Metcalf's bumbling and missed blocks are directly attributed to Rex's ankle injury against St.Louis, Rex's knee against Washington last year and Brian Greise's shoulder against the Raiders.

Metcalf is a slow footed, fat, lazy tool that can only win the point of attack if the LB's leave a deepdish pizza behind the D-line.....

If you can jerry, sign a veteran FA OT and dump Metcalf. Buenning with one good leg is an upgrade over Terrance Metcalf.

I like the trade for Buenning. I am not comfortable with Beekham and Metcalf at guard. Hopefully he can come in and break the starting lineup by week 2 or 3. Still think Anderson is a must sign even though overpaying him would not be a good move. He has a problem with his foot that limited him last season and all the Bears need right now is another gimpy overpaid lineman!!

Whoever the starting left tackle is this year will be a one year rental for Chris Williams when he returns next season!

What's with all the Dwight Freeney this and Dwight Freeney that. He's done. He had 3.5 more sacks last year than me. The only reason you don't hear about how he's lost it or in a slump is because he missed the last seven games in 2007. Even when Colts won SB, Freeney was MIA for the season with 5.5 sacks in 16 games. So what. I'd be more worried about accounting for Bob Sanders or moving someone out of the way for our pedestrian run game.

I really hope that the Bears are after Anderson. Buenning is an unknown, but that is probably an upgrade over Metcalfe.

Chicago needs a tackle?!? That's BLASPHEMY!!! The God-like Chris Williams and his roster spot will miracle the Bears o-line into a top 5 unit until he returns in November. When he returns, cherubs will descend from the skies (following Williams on his pegasus drawn chariot) and lift the offense to the promised land.

Don't you people realize Chris Williams is the greatest tackle to never play and saying we need someone NOW instead of MAYBE in late November is an offense to the greatness of Jerry Angelo and his unquestionable leadership and ability?!?

And you call yourselves real fans! For shame!

Daily Horoscope for November 28

Sagittarius

You may want to do things on the spur of the moment, but pay attention to detail if you want to avoid unexpected expenses. Even a last-minute decision to go for a bike ride could end up with an injury or a flat tire, so try to think your actions out carefully. Once unpredictable Uranus settles down, you can enjoy a more relaxed attitude towards life. This evening you can let your hair down.
