SHELBURNE: USC's Carroll, UCLA's Neuheisel shouldn't regret calls

Full story: LA Daily News

We always want an explanation, something on camera, on the record, that forever can be the sound byte for an incident like what happened in the final frenetic minute of USC's 28-7 victory against UCLA on Saturday at the Coliseum.

UCLA needed this ending to put a fire under thier tails for next year. the problem with ucla is the play calling very predictable and easy to defend. Chow isnt very impressive at all for 2 seasons. He needs to change his play calls because USC's defense knew exactly what UCLA was going to do b4 the play went off

Excellent article; and thank you for bringing some much needed wisdom to this game. I hope TJ Simers over at the Times reads this. He doesn't understand football, or rivalries. He thinks the USC-UCLA rivalry is that cricket game.

Yout got to be kidding me. Most people I know say it's almost unheard of that a coach would have gone for the long pass ahead 14 points with little time left. Ah, Ah, Steve Spurrier use to do this at Florida. His aggroance doing this wasn't well like. And we know how he's doing now. What goes around comes arround. You gotta believe regardles what Pete Carroll says that he being a "competitor" hated it when Brash Jimbo went for the 2 points. Ah, I didn't hear Matt Barkley say that was disrespectful since the Trojans were getting killed especially with his play. Good sportsmanship is no longer viable with college coaches. Run the score up. You see weekly coaches taking timeouts when there is no chance of winning. It's easier to understand they want to go out battling, but that can't be said with this game. And Matt Barkley said UCLA WAS DISRESPECTING THEM. COMM'ON. Maybe he should be playing better but for UNCLE PETE love for this guy. I feel sorry for Corp. One game doesn't define a player. Should Corp transfer to a 1AA school running the spread, he should do fine. By the way, until PC can figure out to defend the spread, he'll have trouble with both Oregons and other teams running the spread. If Corp tranfers ,which he should since he'll never get a chance to play barring majory injury to MB, SC in trouble.. Who ya going to bring out of disrespect?????

Weasel is still a punk. A lying, cheating, whining PUNK. UCLA will rue the day they hired this lowlife scumbag. Can you say overpromise and unerdeliver? Can you say always pointing the blame at someone or something else? Oh, can you say...probation? Read my lips: ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Say what you will, but SC is the school known for accepting the athletic thugs regardless of academic credence. They operate like a pro football, business mentality so unless you are from here and are only making your comment based on Rick's tenor in Washington, you don't realize the first hand arrogance spewing out from the University of Spoiled Children.

It is tough to compete in the same city that omits all the high-profile thugs from around the country and accepts those with lower academic standards. They are the reincarnation of the old University of Miami teams back in the day that started the we don't care about the college experience and how our thugs represent us, but just want them to win at any and all costs! Check online to see which team is the most hated around the country... you guessed it, the Condoms!

Brew In...I like the clever handle, only wish your post didn't smell like old beer spilled on last nights jeans.

You keep on reciting academic standards, but you know that's not true. We try to bring disadvantaged students up to snuff and give them alternatives in life - heck, two weeks ago people here were complaining the Coach Carroll spends TOO MUCH time doint that.

But we know where the L.A. preps go who don't make the cut at USC...Oregon, OSU, Washington State, ASU....

UCLA's best shot at recruiting from SoCal is by promising that freshmen can get playing time because there's no COMPETITION from the upper classemen.

I don't understand how so often these posts turn into an academic ranking spitting contest. Both are very good universities! I went to UCLA and bleed blue and gold, while some of my family members went to SC. We all received great educations!

What's germane here is that this IS a great article. Well-balanced and fair. An we, as fans, can take a page from it.

"Check online to see which team is the most hated around the country... " If that isn't the ultimate compliment, then what is? Those folks are in real psychic pain. So much so that their rarely sated fury compels them to spew boorish remarks in evidence here.

I'm sure that lately most teams love the Bruins and look forward to playing them.

Ditto. Best article on the subject thus far.

If only Plaschke and Slimer (no misspell here ;^) in LAT can develop this matured and balanced perspective, instead of their often shallow, knee-jerk scribbles called "LAT journalism".

Right on EB, it's a good article. And along with your respectful post, it puts things into perspective.

USC jumps up and down on the sidelines and refuse to fight the Bruins who walked out and called them out.

In the meanwhile, Texas is lining up for yet another National Title.

Hook'em Horns

SC is not a power anymore....after Texas kicked their butts, this team has never been a top power ...now they can't even play with Stanford!

Hey buddy, good luck with the Cornhuskers.

You got yourself a fine Heisman candidate...too bad you don't get to play Stanford this year, because they have one too...and they'd give you a hell of a game.

Now be nice, or I'll have to hold my nose and root for a SEC team.

Even though your boy McCoy is having a great year, I have to go with one of our Pac-10 boys Toby Gerhart. But since the media is biased towards everything east of the Rockies, the voting will probably come down this way:
1st - McCoy (Texas)
2nd - Ingram (Alabama)
3rd - Tebow (Florida)
4th - Gerhart (Stanford)
5th - Spiller (Clemson)
6th - Keenum (Houston)
7th - Moore (Boise State)

Neuheisel is a whiner and crybaby. UCLA should dump Neuheisel and find a real coach.
