Unlikely as it sounds, I believe they would remove their vests in a panic. My wife and I were caught in a quick moving storm while snorkeling in John Pennekamp and there were swells from crest to valley of around 8 feet. We are both good swimmers but she thought it would be better to ditch the BC rather than try to swim with it. I had to fight her to leave it on and I even inflated her vest, to be safe (she wasn't happy). Strange things happens when one panics.

Such a shame, they should have just cut the anchor line and motored home.

they said it was a rogue wave and came unexpectedly....the boat flipped before they had a chance to prepare for it. word_up wrote: Such a shame, they should have just cut the anchor line and motored home.

This story seems to get abit stranger as time goes by....Black folks have a history of not being able to swim well, the only survivor is white...bottom line...teach your kids to swim as early as possible, mine were taught starting at 3

You do not know what you might do until you are in a situation like that. The sad part about this whole thing is that it didn't have to happen - you could tell from the weather reports that a front was coming in from the West. This was avoidable.

In this case, I am not sure if Michael Phelps could do better.

Inexperience on the ocean rarely ends well.
An EPIRB would have made the difference between life and death.

The color of a persons skin does not determine whether they can swim well or not. http://cbs4.com/blackhistory/Black.History.Mo... The only intelligent thing you said was to teach children to swim at an early age.

Swimming has nothing to do with this situation. Unless you are going to teach your kids not to be 6'3 and over 200lbs with 4 other guys that size in a 21ft boat 70NM out with no GPS and a stuck anchor, there is nothing sensible you've said.

The ability to swim when you are (50?) miles from shore is moot. Hypothermia was undoubtedly the culprit in this sad case. The survivor stated that they were all clinging to the overturned boat, but the missing boaters turned loose and drifted away.

Going 50+ miles offshore in a 21 ft boat with the weather that was occuring that day was ignorant. And without a distress beacon? Very foolish. I agree black people tend to not be very strong swimmers. RIP
