Pro Bowl teams not half bad

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Despite team-run voting campaigns for fans, the buddy system and indifference, the Pro Bowl teams that were announced Tuesday weren't half bad.

"In the future, the NFL would be served best to take the ballots away from the fans and give one-third of the vote to a media committee, whose members would be more objective and more informed."

I'm shocked a member of the media would express this sentiment.

How do you justify Clinton Portis over Matt Forte? Portis has 1,337 yards rushing, 27 catches for 207 yards and 7 touchdowns. Matt Forte has 1,115 yards rushing, 58 catches for 424 yards and 11 touchdowns. Players with the best numbers should go to the pro bowl, not names. Hopefully the all-pro teams get it right.

Dan, it's weird that you arbitrarily say that Forte is not as deserving as Michael Turner or Clinton Portis when his total yards from scrimmage, are more than Turner and almost equal to Portis'. He also has more total yards than Chris Johnson. Why does it seem that no one counts his receiving yards and the fact that he is the only offensive weapon on a bad (25th ranked) offensive team? Dude, where is the love?

You pompous A**......Football is a business. To generate revenue, you have to have a customer. That customer, my friend, is the fan base. Not the clever, all seeing, all knowing media. Don't you remember that famous moment in Chicago sports reporter history..."Without me you wouldn't have a job...." The pro bowl does not influence the standings. It is an exhibition. If there is anyone other than the players and coaches that should participate, it is the fans. So what if they are wrong? It is about personalities and peer recognition, not about analytical, objective selection. The standings and statistics columns are good for that. If a player or a team does something to promote team spirit in their community, so what? That is a good thing. I hate the Skins, but I don't fault them for what they have done. You seem no longer to be able to see the forest for the trees.

The fact that you'd argue for the inclusion of the media in balloting, and the exclusion of fans, is laughable; especially when you use objectivity in trying to make your case.

The moment media outlets went into a partnership with sports teams on sports programming (Comcast Sportsnet, anyone); objectivity flew out the window.

I'm sure there are no writers at newspapers/magazines that are owned by a corporation voting on hall of fame eligibility in the sports in which the corporation has teams competing, right???

Objectivity in sports media...HA!!

i believe that chad greenway and matt birk from the vikings were the two players in the league that got snubbed the most by not making the pro bowl.

Wow... take away the vote of the fans? Thanks -'cause the sport should never be about the people who pay for the seats, merchandise, etc. It should be left up to "the experts".

i agree. because most of the time the fans vote for the players who play for their favorite team.
