Full story: Chicago Tribune

Let's immediately clarify one misconception about the Bears making Rod Marinelli their new assistant head coach also in charge of the defensive line: His biggest qualification had nothing to do with being Lovie ...

Well I will remain skeptical until some positive results are see. I remain of the opinon that Angelo and Lovie are screwing it up. Urlacher has seen his best days gone by, the receivers corp is a sham, Hester could be one of the best but needs practice, practice, practice at identifing the ball coming out of a crowd and adjusting his body while the ball is in flight, and the soap opera will continue as long as the McCaskey's own the team.

Make no mistake about it if the defense gets off to another poor start next year they will fire Babich and replace him with Marinelli.

The problem with all of this of course is that the system and players will remain the same. Face it the Cover2 is toast and even if it wasn't the Bears don't have the personnel to run it.

Lets look on the bright side. Bill Cowher is going to sit another year out. So when the Bears miss the playoffs for a third consecutive year, which they will, they will only have to eat two years of Lovies contract to hire Cowher. Then we can all say adios amigo to the Cover2 defense once and for all.

I'd rather see Marinelli on my pasta, than Lovie's coaching staff...Bears kill assistants rather than attack root causes of failures: Coaching, drafting and player development.

All of yall suppose to be Bears fans, all you do is complain and cry all day. I guess all of you are football idiots, because none of you know the history of Marinelli. He help alot of players become better players and future HOF's. If you learn your history of him and listen to other defensive players around the league you idiots would know that. However I do agree that McCaskey's and Angelo are true living idiot's, but that's nothing new to us. Lets hope our new WR's corp, kow the plays for next year and that should make it easier. I think Marinelli change the front four of our D into better players like he did with, Sapp, rice, etc.

does anyone care to explain what the dual title of assistant head coach and D-line coach means, other than perhaps a bigger paycheck?

his job is d line coach but Labeling marinelli assistant head coach means that the bears have protected him and he can't leave for another job while under contract unless that position is higher than the current job he has which is assistant heach coach. so he can only leave to be the head coach of a team which will probably not happen anytime soon.

I won't take long for Rod Marinelli to evaluate the line, and sort out who is cashing a paycheck vs. who wants to play football. I would not be surprised to see a player or two packing their bags by the time training camp starts, if not sooner.

I'm glad to see football people, media and fans respecting Rod Marinelli's coming here. Don Shula couldn't win in the psycho Detroit organization.

It took Rod two years just to get those crybabies practicing like pros up there. Numbskull egomaniac Millen, who kept drafting receivers with his #1's while neglecting to get an actual quarterback who could hit them, and the 35 roster players who couldn't make NFL Europe did him in.

When the Kitties fired him, did the owner, president or GM announce it at the press conference? No. They sent Rod out there alone and he handled it with total dignity and class, taking all the responsibility as he had fron the beginning.

It's too bad Rod won't be the DC, because that whole platoon (including the vaunted overrated linebackers) could use a strong dose of discipline and responsibility.

Welcome to Chicago, Rod, I'm glad you're here!

In my opinion this is a good move. I dont care what Marinelli did as a HC in Detroit. Now he can focus on one area of a team doing what he does best. It all starts up front on the D-line and if he can turn Harris, Harrison, Anderson and Brown into beasts up front our D will look as menacing as the Ravens and Steelers defense.

How would Justin Gage look in a Bears uniform right now? Thats right, pretty good. Separation, hands, toughness, route running and a QB that can get him the ball with touch and accuracy.

The Bears need to draft Taylor Mays as their number one pick no questions asked.

mccaskeys don't control the team anymore, it's the phillips-angelo combine. patrick fitgerald should take a look at this arrangement. can we get delhomme or collins on the cheap? YOU KNOW THE BEARS WAY.

I would have made Miranelli my first hire. THey could have waited. I am sure he isn't the most sough after coach considering he went 0-16. Until the Bears get rid of Angelo, and change ownership, and then get a Funky QB again.. expect the same ole mess.

I wouldn't have made Miranelli my first priority. Also get rid of Phillips too. The Bear executives suck. Lovie your head needs to be on a chopping block too because you are as soft as pound cake. We need some attitude like Ditka and Pinella.

It means Babich can stay on the Bears staff without violating NFL rules concerning coaching demotions. Marinelli has the title of Ass't Head Coach, but pretty much takes over Babich's duties as Defensive Coordinator. It really doesn't do anything for Marinelli. BFF Babich gets the vast majority of the benefits.
