Raiders have many glaring holes, could be even worse next season

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

IT'S GOING TO be intriguing to see where the Oakland Raiders offseason maneuvers go from here, because at the moment, it's hard to see how they are appreciably better than the 4-12 team that ended the 2007 ...

Wow Carl, way to speculate the Raiders' demise just like the rest of the haters in the press. What a surprise. We've simply cut some more dead weight. Addition by subtraction just like last year. FYI- this team is rebuilding.
The only real losses in all this were Porter who never lived up to his expectations and was a cry baby most of his time with us and Clemons who proved useful in passing rushing situations but will now be replaced by Richardson who will now receive more opportunities.
In terms of WR, there's still plenty of good WR (and that's all Porter ever was) available in FA. Hackett, Johnson, Walker & Carter just to name a few. There's also a great supply in the draft beyond the first round, Sweed, Hardy, Thomas, Doucet & Manningham just to name a few.
I guess you forgot that Sapp, while playing well, was completely past his prime. He was also in the way of Kelly's progresssion in his natural position. So I think we got better in the DT position already. Sands was a disappointment last year but he could just as easily bounce back this season. Brayton was a decent backup, nothing more. A true tweener, he never lived up to expectations and can be easily replaced through the draft.
Sims was a good player but again playing past his prime and will be replaced by Henderson (Why else would they cut him) or another player in the draft.
With the addition of Gabril Wilson we improved an already tough secondary and can finally move Huff to his natural position of FS. Again improvement.
We have Fargas, Bush & possibly Rhodes, McFadden or another RB late in the draft in the backfield so there's no problem there.
At QB we have JM & Walter who is no longer a rookie with 3 years under belt and is more than capable as a backup. We could also pick up Leftwich, Carr or another castoff for insurance. They will not be any worse than DC or MClown who will implode in Miami, wait and see.
Overall, why don't you wait til FA and the draft are over before running your mouth about how much worse the Raiders will be. Not all of our offseason needs can be addressed this season and no one expects us to go to the SB this year. A .500 year would be more along the lines of what most fans are hoping for and IMO completely possible. Now go take your haterade somewhere else.

Well said.
I think we are two postions from a playoff game and 3 from a playoff run....meaning if we could get a stud in at WR....a stud of a brick wall for O-line and a run stopper...on D--Line...we are going places(obviously this is providing JRuss works out and Michael Bush)....But this will proabably take this year and next at least....we can get fillers but we need studs...

We need to find a way to extend "Raider Nation" beyond the realm of its homosexual fan-base who like to dress up in bondage uniforms and makeup, and reach out to the ugly folk who don't need makeup to look really scarey.

The raiders are definetly in need of a lot of positions but why have they waited so long 2 make moves? This is very unlike the raiders 2 do nothing in the offseason! As long as al davis is the owner the raiders are doomed!

I really do think the most vexing issue is the coaching issue. If Kiffin goes...then there's no question: this team won't win three games. If Kiffin stays, but is a lame duck, same deal. So let's get that settle first.

After that, where are the big terrible losses really? All Jerry Porter was was a perennial disappointment. Rhodes and Jordan are dispensable with Bush in the back field next year. Chris Clemmons must have had the quietest 8 sack season in the history of league. Culpepper? McCown? I really wasn't impressed or depressed by either. I still think Walter has never had a fair chance...but you do certainly need a number three. But where was Tom Brady drafted again?

I think the big thing here is trading that pick. It doesn't look like it will be easy, but that pick has to go. We'd get a better deal on the trade or even with a free agent than the money a No 4 will demand. I'd LOVE to see Ellis in silver and black, or Howie Long's kid, but I'd rather see it traded under any circumstances.

Nevertheless, what wide receiver can we get under any circumstances? Probably the best bet is to trade down to the bottom of the first round and get the kid from Cal.

Raiders need 3 players to be able to win the AFC West. A solid defensive tackle, a left tackle and a #1 wide receiver. If they can't retain their players and get these 3 players by 2008 or 2009 then Al Davis needs to leave and give the team to me.
