UTEP Miner DB leads nation in tackles

There are 11 comments on the El Paso Times story from Sep 16, 2009, titled UTEP Miner DB leads nation in tackles. In it, El Paso Times reports that:

Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith was supposed to be the leader of this UTEP defense. He's the Miner back, the hybrid safety/linebacker who is the featured player in the 3-3-5 defense, the spot dubbed the "Brian Urlacher position" after the Chicago Bears star who brought it some attention at the University of New Mexico.

I know I've been a huge hater of D.C. Smith since he got burnt time after time at Tech, but I must admit he has stepped his game up drasticly. Keep it up and I might actually apologizes for all the horrible things I have said.

A nice anecdote to illustrate the good side of UTEP athletics. Sometimes people deserve second chances.

Only 2 games into the season and the Times wants to brag that there is a Miner leading a stat in the nation?

P.S. Anytime a DB is leading in tackling, that's not necessarily a good thing.

Actually, a defensive back leading in tackles meams the down lineman and backers aren't doing their jobs.

It's never a good thing, but El Paso only knows the great Mexican game of soccer.

You need to read up on this defense. He is not your typical DB. It's not the 4-3 or the 3-4. GOAAAAL!!!!!

But what I am trying to say is if a running back is running into the secondary and the Lineman and Linebackers aren't tackling and he is the last line of defense from saving a TD, that is not necessarily a good thing.

If he is putting up Thomas Howard and Barron Wortham line stats..........uh oh!

You have to remember that he is playing that position where he transitions fron db to linebacker. That's what's so unique about the 3-3-5. It takes a special athlete to play this position. I can see what you're saying in the 4-3 ans 3-4.
