Every defense came out in the nickel or dime from the 1st play on, and they still couldn't run the ball. Yet.**** Dan still threw for 300+ and 3 TD's, and won more than he lost. We won't even comment on how lame all of his defenses were. He had a few bad games when it counted, but all you need to do is look at Elway. He wasn't going to win anything until they got lucky with Terrel Davis. Not to mention you can say all you want about the Mark's brothers.**** Dan made them, and not the other way around. They were both tiny, and Duper didn't even have good hands. His best receiever was probably Keith Jackson. So get a clue. If Dwight Stephenson doesn't get hurt, he anchors that line for another 5+ years, and they probably get back to the SB and win one. There's also the torn achilles on the freak play in Cleveland. He was never the same after that. So all you folks doggin Marino are CLUELESS. 100% without a doubt rode the short bus to school. Oh yeah and no way was Keith Jacskon his greatest receiver - first of all he was a TE, second of all everybody knows Clayton was his all-time go to guy.. And your screen name - Stephenson was not the greatest center of all time, Jin Otto was. Stephenson may be in the top three or four but not #1. Even if he played another 5 years, I doubt the Dolphins go to another SB, their defense was c.r.a.p.o.l.a.

In hindsight, Marino was just a waste of Shula's time.

Both you and the guy you replied to make valid points. He's right about his Elway and Terrell Davis comment, though I wouldn't quite go so far as to say Denver "got lucky" with Davis. After all, as good as Davis was, Denver continued to crank out some very good production from his successors, so (take nothing away from Davis) Denver's OL had something to do with their success running the football. He's also right that Marino never had even a decent running game or defense the caliber of Elway, Montana, etc. He's also right about the impact of Marino's achilles injury on his career. I never saw Jin Otto play so I can't comment on him and your comparison to Stephenson. All I know is, Stephenson was phenomenal and his early loss was devasting, though I agree that alone was not enough to account for Marino's failure to win a championship. You're correct about the crappy defense and the role it played in the failure to return to the SB. You're also correct in saying that Clayton, not Keith Jackson, was Marino's best WR (though, I will say, Jackson was a serious threat as a pass-catching TE. The only problem with him, as you may recall, is he also had an uncanny knack for dropping passes in crucial game situations--I still recall the one he coughed up while running in the open field after the catch in the playoff game they lost to SD in the early '90's. Ouch!!). I don't think it's entirely fair to the Marks Brothers, notwithsatanding their diminuative physical stature, to say that it was Marino alone who made them what they were. Finally, I'm not sure I'd rank Elway as a better QB than Marino, though I may be inclined to grant you the Montana argument, who, BTW, I would also say was far and away a better QB than Favre. The trouble with Favre is, he's the contemporary, so he sticks in everyone's mind while some of these earlier guys get forgotten. A classic case of "Out of Sight, Out of Mind". But I'd pesonally make a distinction b/w the "Best Ever QB" category and the "Best Ever Passer." Purely ss a passer, IMO, Dan had no equal, as a QB there's a legit. argument.

He is not the greatest QB of all time. I would rank Montana, Elway, Favre and Unitas all ahead of Marino. But of course you could say Marino was one of the greatest, I suppose. Remember, it's all a matter of opinion. So according to you, Super Bowl wins are the measure of quarterback greatness? By that measure, Terry Bradshaw is the greatest QB ever. He won four Super Bowls over a 6-year span. That must mean that Robert Horry (8 NBA championship rings) is the 2nd greatest basketball player ever, 2nd ONLY to Bill Russell (11 championship rings)
