Full story: Baltimore Sun

Mike Singletary put his stamp on his coaching debut for the San Francisco 49ers , benching turnover-prone quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan in the second quarter and then sending volatile tight end Vernon Davis , a ...

A player held accountable and a coach disciplining his team. What a concept. Some Ravens fans might have a hard time with this the way they reacted to the Harbargh/McCallister situation.

There should be more coaches like Singletary! Great job coach!! Davis' parents/grandparents raised him better than that so he should know better! He must believe the hype..that money has gone to his head.

That post-game was freaking awesome. Way to tell it like it is. Is it me, or is Singletary cut out of the same cloth that Mike Ditka was cut out of (not a surprise, of course, but damn...)

It would appear that Tampa has the "screaming chucky face", the steelers had "the chin" for years, and San Fran has "the eyes".

All Singletary did was switch the focus off of his poor coaching and on to Vernon Davis. Nobody is mentioning that his debut as head coach was such a flop! The 49ers actually played worse in this game then in any game they played all year. Who is he going to blame next week? The defense sucked, missed tackles and assignments and had problems getting the right number of players on the field. So he points his finger at offense players. Maybe he should look in the mirror. Maybe if he had some class he would correct what he doesn't like in the players in private and to their face rather than in TV. I wonder how he is going to like it when the criticize him in public. They will turn on him; this isn't 1985 when the players had single-digit IQs and would that the ranting and raving of idiots. I hope that he is just renting his house.

Davis has been singing the blues since he got there...feels he is not being used enough. He wants out and is looking to make it happen.

I am not defending Davis; if he needs to be called out, then the coaches should do that the right way. If Singletary has a problem with players he should address it with then in private. He was complaining about players being all about themselves and not about the team; what was he doing in front of the cameras?? He was deflecting the blame from himself to his players; they played worse than any thing this year and Mike Nolan wasn't the head coach, Mike Singletary was. It didn't look to me like the team responded to him as the head coach. I am a big-time niners fan who has is displaced on the east coast for a couple of years and had to get a dish so I can watch them. What a waste of money that has been this year. I have watched every game and as bad as they have been this year, last week was, by far, the worst. They couldn't get the right guys on the field half of the time. They were a joke and beaten by a team that had to play all kinds of back up players... And no one is talking about how much worse they looked than under Nolan, people are only talking about Singletary's meltdown... I think he did it on purpose to deflect the blame. It goes right up there with Jim Mora and Dennis Green... maybe he will be part of a beer commercial someday. What a joke!! Only, I am crying, not laughing.

philly, what you don't understand that the previous coach didn't do anything productive, and that the whole team is pretty poor. Vernon Davis has been a bust so far in his tenure in San Francisco, and a locker room cancer. He needed to be called out. Singletary finally pulled the plug on the Mike Martz-induced JTO disaster. Singletary, now that he's in charge, will be cleaning house, starting with JTO.

Neil, I understand. You have no idea how bad the team was that Nolan took over. The previous year, they finished 2-14 and they had few draft choices. Dennis Ericson and Terry Donahue completely ruined the team. This team has improved a lot from that 2004 team (of course, they couldn't get much worse) The once great front office of the niners is now a joke. Nolan didn't draft these players, the front office did. Singletary has been in charge of the defense since 2005; last Sunday was the worst game they have played since the 2-14 year. Who is responsible for that. Davis has been a bust but no one in SF is calling him a cancer. The players who are talking now are actually defending him. I am not defending Davis, he does need to grow up. I would suggest that there are better ways to get young players attention. It is clear that in his first week as head coach, the players did not respond to him; I hope that they respond to him and he turns them around; but I haven't seen anything that would suggest this will happen. He can't clear house; too many niners have long term contracts; his front office can't evaluate players. He is stuck with the players he has and he showed a lack of class by publicly doing something that should be done in private. Hopefully, the niners will clean house in the front office and get a real general manager and head coach.

I know all of this, I've been a 49er fan since I was 4. What I think, though, is that Singletary needs to do his old-school treatment of players like Davis, because clearly nothing since Mooch's years with Young have worked since.
