I say start Asher Allen and see what he got to offer. Heard some good things in camp bout that guy. I would like to see him start over Paymah. But as far as Paymah goes, he doesn't totally suck like how some ppls says he is. He did got beat by that 30 yd pass frm Flacco, but overall he did solid. It not as if he got torch on every single play and was totally clueless how to cover the receiver. He was one on one witht he receiver on that play, but didn't turn around to make a play on it. But either way, its better to see how good Asher Allen is. Heard that he's the next Winfield.

There must be a virus that permeates all Viking secondary's; with the exception of the stretch run last year Viking secondary's have always placed the welcome mat out prominently. If you check the records since 93, I'm sure we've given up more career best days to QB's than any other team. We can't stop the pass. We haven't been effective against it since 93. It's a joke. MW and TJ are the two most incompetent safeties in the NFL. TJ is always late. CG has taken a big step back from last year. Even with constant pressure our guys can't prevent a completion. What's the answer? I'm tired of this crap EVERY YEAR!!!

And another thing, why is it that the Vikes are the only team (regardless of D-coordinator) that refuses to challenge receivers at the line? We never play tough, bump coverage. We're always sitting back in soft man situations, too eager to give up the 10-15 yd completion in order to prevent the big one. AW can tackle but this cover skills are average at best. Can EJ or Greenway cover any tight ent? Can they cover a back for just a few yards? We've got issues. I'm SO TIRED of watching Viking secondary's just give up passing yards like food stamps EVERY YEAR, YEAR AFTER STINKIN YEAR!!!

Your right chuck we do not play tight Man to man coverage and we are average at best at coverage. We need Winfield back against the Steelers to have any chance in stopping the pass. If Winfield is not 95% sit him for the Green bay game. That game is more important then this one. If we can beat the steelers at home great if not the GB game is another must win for us...

Winfield will be fine.
A simple foot owie will not keep him out.
They will play this out all week.
It is just a game.

I agree. Let him rest and if we lose to the steelers, that would be an ok game to lose. Get that 1st loss out of the way. Otherwise, the media will have the players thinking 16-0 and all that BS!

I AGREE with chuck 44,we havn't had a good secondary for years, our safeties have not helped at all in coverage or tackling...teams have been killing the D on dump off passes, screens and slants...E.J.'S A beast of a LB BUT he's got burned alot in coverage...if the vikes don't correct the pass coverage the O'S GONNA be in alot of shoot outs,i hope A.W. GETS BETTER soon...GO VIKES

That's it... I'm done with the Strib and their "Premium" ripoff. Wasting my time to click on some basic story only to try to get me to pay for what I can get everywhere else for free? Shame on you. Boycott this site for good.

The reason we don't play bump coverage is because we play the "Tampa 2" cover 2 defensive scheme.

In the cover 2, the CB's play off the line, but have greater run stopping duties while the safeties are responsible for deep coverage over the top. This is also the reason why the TE tends to eat us up, as it leaves EJ to usually read pass and drop into coverage more often (usually the MLB, but sometimes the Will or Sam LB)

The cover 2 zone is the reason we (usually) don't give up the deep ball, but can get eaten up underneath if the pass rush doesn't collapse the pocket quick enough.

I think we're 15-3 in our last 18 games, so it's hard to really bash the scheme we use. The Baltimore game was just a total collapse in the 4th quarter and we were lucky to come away with the W, but over the course of a season it's a pretty sound strategy, as our record suggests.

Our safeties have been letting us down, and both Madieu and Tyrell, especially Tyrell, need to step up their game.

Big Ben isn't going to have 9 seconds to throw the ball against our rush, I think we match up better than most pundits expect with the Steelers, Winfield or no Winfield.

I HATE CHILDRESS!!!! Please no extension for dumb, gutless, and ugly baldie. If Wilf wants baldie to stay in Vikingland, make baldie a GM instead of Head Coach, because baldie have no balls and smarts to be a NFL head coach. Thanks for reading....

Karl Paymah looked like a ragdoll, if Winfield couldn't go I like to see either B. Sapp or A. Allen take over that job for one week. Then the bye week is her.

I agree the safties are not playing well. Why did we get rid of Sharper???? Madieu Williams isn't the player the Vikes thought he would be. Heard that Shaun Rogers is available and lets face it, Pat Williams isn't the player he was 3-4 years ago. Maybe Richard Seymour from the Raiders too. It would amaze people how much the better the secondary would look with another top notch DE providing pressure on the QB

Those were outstanding throws and catches made by Baltimore that couldn't be defended. On the touchdown catch, Paymah was looking to catch the ball over his shoulder and was using his back to block out the receiver. However, he didn't anticipate him elevating and reaching over him to that degree. Flacco was throwing with such confidence knowing Winfield wasn't there that he played way above his potential, and his receivers were making outstanding plays. Baltimore fans also noted that the offensive play by Rice, Flacco and the receivers was unreal, unlike anything they have seen before. Of course, they are as concerned about their defense as much as we are about ours and they feel they couldn't stop Favre at all.

That's just the way it is when two good teams get on a roll...just like the Giants and Patriots two years ago.

If Childress makes the same stupid play calls again, Third down about 18 yards for a first down, and what did he call? Run,run, run! Third down? The Steelers are ready for this clown! It won't really matter who is hurt and who isn't...Every one in the area knows what Chilly is going to call before Chilly knows himself!!!At least he did know where to find the challenge flag this last time around...Hurrah...

The safeties are the key, save the injury to AW. Madieu Williams tackles like Deon Sanders (With pillows duct taped to his hands). Both he and Tyrell were to blame on that 30 yard TD run. Paymah would be better if he actually glanced back at the QB on occasion and played underneath on those sideline routes. Where's EJ been this year? Too many missed tackles on a very average running back. Oh, message to Chilli: if you're kicking a teams butt...DON'T STOP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING UNTIL THEY PROVE THAT THEY CAN STOP YOU! I.E.; Vikings pass D in the fourth quarter, they plundered our D and almost won the game.

Coach the team to win the game, not just not to lose the game.

I'm starting to hate the cover 2.Its very overrated, let players make instinctive plays on the ball.Look at that garbage d in new oleans, playing like champions.I wish we were more creative on d.
