Full story: Newsday

Been waiting by the phone all week thinking Eric Mangini might call looking for a few suggestions about how to turn his team around, but only the telemarketers are getting through.

The idea that few carries is Jone's problems and not the line, is so wrong. Ever think backs get more carries BECAUSE they are winning? This line is awful, I screamed when they got Jones, not a bad back but hell he's no LJ and look what he is doing without a line? They needed 2Gs and a RT, and now they are the same only with NO LG - or mentor and leader on the line.
I'd rather see Leon get 20 carries a game spotted by Jones, he can do more damage with the rare opening, and he should be one of Chad's primary receivers, how that's not the case I don't understand.
Jones stats from last year - 227 carries in games he had plus 20 carries - for 4.0 ypc. 131 carries in games he had less than 20 carries, for 4.7 ypc. That's including post season.

I agree "to a point" First, make the QB change, at this point it can't hurt. As for Thomas Jones? Just maybe the reason his number is not being called more often is because he is just not getting the job done. Remember, a yard per rush average is figured the same no matter how many times you run the ball and 3.8 is just not getting it done. As for the D? It seems to me they were geting it done pretty good (at least not this bad) in the Herm era using a 4-3, same personal except for Abraham (which was another huge mistake) along with Kendell. To sum it up, i'm a Pennington fan, but as I said, at this point a change can't hurt BUT! take a look around the rest of the roster and tell me how many all pro's you find.

I don't think Joe Montana would be winning for the Jets right now. Chad gets too much grief. 2.8 YARDS PER CARRY! When teams have no respect for your running game, of course their DB's are going to take chances and cut out of their coverages. If the offensive line got it's crap together, I don't believe we would be seeing these high risk passes that are being thrown.

Bob,

Although I agree with most of what you are saying, I disagree about Chadley.
The effectiveness of his play is in direct relation to the run game!. It is that simple.
Everything else will fall into place, e.g.
More runs, less passing.
More runs, more time of posession.
More runs, less time for our defense to be crap.

Chad is a ball control west coast kind of guy, when it works it is a beautiful thing to watch....(remember the 49ers in the 80's).

It all adds up, A QB that the D knows won't throw more than 20-20 yards down field and whenn he does the ball is so soft any DB can get to it, 8 D players in the Box the OL is blocking 5 on 8 trying to make hole, Justin has had a chance to make game changing plays twice and failed. The guy avoids contact and lets the DB make a play to the ball. With a soft tosser QB he is not the answer to get more throws to him. Maybe the Clemens era starts once the Jets are 1-6 after playing the Eagles and Bengals

makes you wonder why get Bowens and then not play him? The Giants playing 4 DE's gave the Jets and most teasm fits. The stubborn use by the jets of the 3-4 makes no sense. They can't stop a run or pass when they need to.

Bob, I usually enjoy your reporting, but your advice to the team is not only suspect, but meaningless.

You say they should get TJ & LW going & treat it as if all that takes is more carries. There's only one ball in play at a given point in time. Do you really think BS is viewing tape, and failing to recognize obvious opportunities for the halfbacks to make plays? Are you seeing these? If so, I suggest you send Eric your resume!

Your CP/KC advice is similarly puzzling. Is it time to get off the pot or do you give it one more squeeze on Sunday?
"Be ready" is meaningless.

"Blitz Blitz Blitz" yeah, that's a disciplined defensive approach that's proved successful to so many teams in the past. Buddyball?

I couldn't agree more w/ each comment. Being the professional armchair quarterback I am, please also inform Coach Manclueless w/ Clemens' live arm we then might be able to open up our running game. Get off this 3-4 defense, don't even pretend to use it, isn't it obvious if Robertson, Vilma, Thomas, each of our corners, etc., don't get it by now-CHANGE IT.

How about giving the ball to our 3rd running back--Stacy Tutt? He is the reason that Danny Ware was cut.

I am not saying that he is the solution (because we will still have five or six trying to block eight) but let's give him the damn ball and see what happens.

For the record, in today's Star Ledger, it was reporte that Chad is changing a lot of the plays at the line of scrimmage. He's changing running pplays to passing plays. I guess this is his way of trying to do "too much himself" his words.
Maybe he's watched too much game film of Peyton. He thinks he can control the game with his arm.

I like Mangini, his offense coordinator, his players on offense. But the defense is not working.Wrong players for a 3-4 defense, also was never happy with the choice for defensive coordinator. They are either too small for there position or playing out of position. When will they fix this?

You don't light a fire under an under-motivated team by threatening to do something. You light that fire by doing it!

In his one start this season, Clemens lit the only fire the Jets have had lit under them in all season. He is young! He showed spunk in his running and with his strong arm! He showed guts in hits willingness to fire the long ball or split-the-seam with a pass.

Yes, blitzing more MIGHT spark some energy IF they make some sacks. Yes, giving Jones the ball MIGHT spark some energy IF he breaks one. Yes, dispersing the ball to different players MIGHT make a difference IF McCareins catches it or IF Washington returns to form.

The only energy Pennington has sparked this season has been courtesy of the two 10-yard lob touchdown passes in the Dolphin game. Heck, he wouldn't have even gotten those if not for his receivers making circus-like catches combined with the referees kind instant-replay verdicts.
If not for the kindness of those two calls, the Jets are winless at this point in time.

When the Patriots sensed the man at the helm was rowing instead of sailing, they put Brady in and the proof is in the pudding. Nobody knew who Brady was until someone had the guts to admit the Patriots ship wasn't sailing anymore. They made a bold move and sat their number one draft pick for a fifth-rounder! Since then, that ship has been cruising!

Note to Mr. Mangini and crew: The Jets ship is sinking. Your number one draft pick is barely keeping it afloat. IF you patch a hole here or there, it MIGHT float or be rowable on occasion. The running game MIGHT do this IF that. The defense MIGHT do this IF that. Changing the man at the helm WILL give the Jets boat a shot a cruising. He WILL give the Jets hope. His youth and exuberance WILL spark everyone on the team. He MIGHT not right the ship, but he WILL do at worst as well as his predecessor. The choice is obvious: Its time for a new man at the helm.

I find it funny how Newsday tells the Jets coaching staff what needs to be fixed. What needs to really be fixed is Newsday's football picks contributors. When have they ever finished over .500?

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Scorpio

A loved one is extremely upset today, and you'll soon know all about it. Things are out of proportion, so a minor hitch becomes a huge drama that means you've got to drop everything in order to calm them down. Hey ho. At least it won't last long. If you're doing some last-minute Christmas shopping, you won't have as much patience as usual and nor will anyone else.
