Giants' Webster: Starter to bench to inactive to starter again?

There are 1 comment on the The Associated Press story from Jan 4, 2008, titled Giants' Webster: Starter to bench to inactive to starter again? . In it, The Associated Press reports that:

“If I can play, I would like to.”

Corey Webster lost his job as a starting cornerback with the New York Giants, not his confidence.

Right now, that's a big plus for Tom Coughlin and the Giants heading into an NFC wild-card game against the Buccaneers in Tampa on Sunday.

With starter Sam Madison's status uncertain because of a pulled stomach muscle and backup Kevin Dockery still bothered by a hip flexor problem, Webster might start this weekend for the first time since mid-September.

'I have been playing the last couple of weeks and every time an opportunity comes to showcase what you can do, it's great to get out there and play and have fun with the rest of the team,' Webster said. Read more

Corey may be one of the handful of Giants players who will make or break today's game. I for one feel the need to make excuses for his mediocre performance... it was Lewis' lack of leadership, poor scheming, etc., not Webster. Spags certainly made that a viable argument by moving this defense up from 18th to 7th in just one year. Still, this first day draft pick out of LSU three years ago doesn't start. Ok, in addition to Lewis' mess, he has had his share of injuries. Well, he's healthy now, and he'll start today. If he looks lost out there, and the Bucs are successful all day throwing the ball, then no more excuses for Corey. He either comes into his own today, or he tells Spags he'll be coming off the bench for the foreseeable future, and he wasn't worth the second round pick.
