Shipley to Steelers?

Aug 22, 2008 Full story: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 9

Could A.Q. Shipley be the next center for the Steelers? I wonder if they are keeping their eye on his progress this final season at Penn State? Greg, Frederick, Md.

Of course, Steelers are going to be picking so late that it would probably mean a second rounder for them, unless they were able trade up in the third. I've always kind of thought they had their eyes on Darnell Stapleton for that position, and were going to solidify guard and tackle instead, but who knows?

I'll take Rex's opinion on this. The Steelers have been hot on Stapleton for a while. They scouted him out and brought him. As is their method they are bringing him along slowly to be the starting center. his stint at guard is just that. he's filling in for an injured veteran. When hartwig's contract is up they'll let him go and stapleton will be our starter. He will have had several years behind a FA vet to learn the ropes. just my opinion. look for the steelers to draft or find an OT or OG. Also they will be in the market for a nose tackle, hampton has 3 years left.

I wouldn't mind seeing virtually the entire draft spent on O and D lines. We need one blue-chip FB in there, of course, but you can find those in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Also, probably, a little depth in the secondary would be nice, especially if we lose McFadden.

If memory serves me correctly all of the Steelers great centers were converted guards. The pattern with Stapleton may fit. Lets just hope we get some lineman this draft that can make the grade. From what I know of this year's draft, there will be many quality guys available in later rounds.

Sorry to contradict you, Bill. But Stapleton is not a center. He may have been drafted as one, but he can't hold down the point of attack. He's weak at the punch and he is NO Faneca. I know. we're all look for the future replacement for him. But it isn't in Undrafted free agents. The only shot we have at not getting Ben killed next year is owning up and taking Alex Mack as a center this year. We've had 3 straight seasons of taking best athlete available.

Fortunately, our offense has adapted. However, if we want to keep our offense intact next year...then we must draft big and nasty. we've neglected that for far too long.

We draft Mack at Center. That's our first pick. maybe Robinson will fall to us in the second...but we need a true Center. I love our pick from Carlina, but he isn't a game changer.

End Rant.

In contrast, Centers usually fall to the 3rd round. Last year's draft fell agaist the grain when the Colts picked Pollick. However, I think we win this year. We need an offensive tackle. We also need a CB to accomodate the vacancy we will most likely have. The CB pool is thick. Most teams will pick speadsters that will outlast most WRs. I imagine tbe Steelers picking a CB that is above 200 lbs. Above 6'. and can jolt a WR like a missile.

We'll see. The Steelers are notorious for picking best athlete available. But with their entire line gone in free agency and their secondary in question...we'll see.
