A well-researched, interesting, albeit somewhat depressing, read.

agreed. good article. at least we're doing big things now. i really think that in three years, were going to be in a much better place and doing some big things again. we'll have something to finally cheer about, and something for all the haters to hate on again. lol RFFR!

im sick of Reggie continuing to blame AL.It was his team period. He won 3 Superbowls and had his team in great podition to make the playoffs. He was 8-8 and reggie 4-12.AL was the glue that held the RAIDERS together. R.I.P AL DAVIS

First, Al Davis deserves more respect for what he did for the NFL than almost anyone. Second, yes Dave brought 3 SB Championships to the Raiders, but the most recent was a few decades ago. So the game changed and all stuck with his same philosophies. And we hardly were in great position to make the playoffs. If you remember Hue had them playing. Then flamed out towards end of season. I could see why you would think great position. We had been losing for a decade and 8-8 was a step in the right direction. But Al is no longer with us. So ...woulda, coulda, shoulda doesn't do any of us any good. Some think Reggie is messing up the Raiders, Some think he is doing right. I think he is on the right path. It is just not likely to happen as quick as we would like. I have two hopes for the Raiders, first I hope we stay in Oakland. Second I hope we get back to winning and teams not wanting to play us because we are good again.

Al Davis deserves respect, yes, for leading the charge on racial integration of players and coaches and fielding some great teams in the 60's-early 80's, as well as getting them back in the late 90's and to the SB in 2002. He is also completely responsible for the total decline of this team and the terrible turnover at coach, the inability to recruit proven coaches, totally screwed up payroll, as well as YEARS of wasted picks on idiots that are fast or can throw far but can't play the game. So let's move on. I will give McKenzie some time - 2 years. I will give him no CREDIT until he actually proves he's had success

Simple fact for me was that we were 8-8 two years in a row and McKenzie's first attempt to make us "better" resulted in a 4 win year. I agree with the holistic approach to the organization and hell, i even like the way he is doing things, but we need to see some flashes of his brilliance this year, and consistency the next. He threw away a machine that was already working, and we are now waiting on him to make another one.

Teams this decade have come out of nowhere to be a playoff& superbowl contender.with a 7-2 start and a final season game that could've put us in playoff,I just didn't see the need for us to blow up the team, who's to say we can build a winner thru draft, look at all the top draft picks that have changed teams this yr alone.. plain and simple in my eyes, when Gruden left,so did the raiders, coaching is so vital to a teams success,I hope Allen is the one!!! With his involvement with the senior bowl I hope he shows us a promising draft!!!

"it will be another two or three years before you can really judge the new regime in oakland and maybe that's not what the RAIDER fans want to hear, but that's reality!"
how long will it be before you can judge the new regime in oakland? 52.3 said after 2016 season!
" can't build rome over night!"!
i guess the colts are gee oh dee, cause they they did it! the issue here is, how they did it! but RAIDERS?(LOL), computers don't fix the team. spend it on players first build a team and and when you get good you make money. then? you can afford a computer! okay, a lil sarcasm, but the colts didn't just de-gut to rebuild. maybe that was the problem here. okay, let's just say that mckenzie comes in and de-guts THE WHOLE TEAM PRACTICALLY IN ONE SHOT! i believe we probably would have been better off this season already. all new staff, all new players, "of course, for the most part" but it's about how mckenzie went about things. AND YOU GUYS KNOW THAT? but some of you choose to say "i can wait till what? 2016? yeah, while the team gets better for the future so we can be in it every year in the future". Think the colts are looking back and won't be in it in the future? SH.T, even the browns and the lions have passed us up. BUT NO!!!! we're in it for the future for the "looooong haul".
2013 in the trash? how about the end of 2014? that's when we judge? but, i'm with everyone here on topix and all over RAIDER nation, "i have no choice". maybe after the 2014 season we things will be better. T_RAIDER, tell me you didn't write this article!
I STILL HOPE IM WRONG ABOUT THIS NEW REGREEN! REGIME!

Who is to say we can't? Bottom line there are teams that built a team thru draft and FA without spending a ton on the wrong players. Patriots, Steelers, Giants, Packers...they weren't built through patchwork. Sure some had to be added like all teams do. But Do you notice anything about the teams that built through similar means? Give up? They have all been competitive for long periods of time. I know you can rip it apart with specific examples. But the broader point is true.

reggie mckenzie doing a great job amid mounting critisicism. well, i gotta say, he is doing a great job mounting criticism. those that don't want to wait, have to wait. those that want to wait? well, they have to wait (lol) they have no choice either. so let's just keep watching our RAIDERS either fail? or, get better! it's just difficult to watch us get beat up out there. BADLY, WITHOUT COMPETING! at least in the past, with al davis crappy regime, we may have been bad but we were always fighting with heart. RAIDER heart. that was called, commitment to excellence" and when we were out of it for that season, it was "just win baby".
(LOL) maybe that whole heart of what the RAIDERS image is, is gone! even the new era green bay RAIDERS forgot or want to forget where they came from. and please don't say" oh, we just want to be like everyone else and be in it every year". REALLY? i mean. c'mon maaan!

A very good article.

I'm trying my best to be patient (we don't have a choice LOL). I will stand by Reggie long enough for him to make a difference--I'm figuring we should be in the playoffs by 2015 (maybe 2014 with good moves). After that, I think it's fair to judge Reggie.

Hey Real Misterio, as always, I love your optimism brotha, and would love it if you were right about a quick turn-around. Unfortunately, for us and the Raiders, Indy's worst to first scenario was a very different animal. The writer pointed out the differences with their draft picks, cap sit'n, operating deficit, etc, etc. God bless Al Davis, but how sad is it that McKenzie needed to upgrade the Raiders computer system to the tune of $750,000?! McKenzie was a Raider and saw firsthand what "Just win baby" and all of our other slogans used to mean. He's not making these moves to be popular, but to "just start winning again". His job will depend on it. Peace out.

Some of the facts are true. It is not the entire story and definetely tilts to benefit McKenzie. I can not believe this is accepted as the truth. Are we really suppose to believe that McClain quit the team? I recall him losing part of his job and took it like a man. Then lost his entire job and blew-up. Did he put himself on the suspended list too? Are we to expect a GM's role is intervene with issues like this or do we say Good Job Reggie for ignoring the situation and publicly stating that. Are we to believe that the game passed Al Davis at the beginning of the salary cap era? What about Bruce Allen who was specifically in charge of the salary cap since Al recognized the importance of the position? When Nnamdi's contract self-voided on Al's watch the Raiders were left with $0 dead money. Are we suppose to say Good Job Reggie after renogiating Seymour's contract and leaving $14 million of dead money? Are we suppose to believe that Palmer's cap number this year has nothing to do with restructuring his contract twice, the last time by Reggie? Are we to believe the Raiders quality of draft were poor, since they did not have computers when the rest of the league is picking up their player as they are let go? Are we to say Good Job Reggie for hiring a coach without head coaching experience to take care of all decisions on the field while you were busy revamping the scouting department? Are we to accept that it is not the GMs job to speak with players/agents about contracts after the league season opens (like Lechler and Palmer)? Are we to believe it was all Greg Knapp's fault and RM/DA had nothing to do with it? Are we to believe that a culture change was needed? Are we to believe that drafting natural leaders is a new idea for the Raiders or does anyone recall Al and Cable draft team captains? Are we suppose to believe this is a new era excellence or a new era of excuses? Really?

My sentiments exactly in regards to throwing away the machine and starting over. The team was building up adding an impact free agent or two. These guys come in and act like they believed all the stuff that was written in the media about the Raiders was true. Didn't even bother to look around or they did not grasp what the team was all about.

(lol), well i can tell he's not making these moves to be popular. look, there is no doubt he is trying to do right. can't blame him for trying to do right. it's his job. BUT DON'T THROW AWAY A SEASON! what i meant about indi is they didn't take their whole team apart. they made a few moves. and are making a few moves here and there. they are doing the same as any other team in the nfl, while still competing! THAT, got them closer to or in the playoffs. we could be that team. BUT instead, we're in it for the looooooong haul and patience. and nothing promising. and to top it off, they are making you all believe that this team will be good in THREE YEARS!, THREE YEARS!!? and,(lol), let's say we are good in three yrs. what if another three yrs go by without playoffs or championships? BOOM! what a kick in the ass! i'd rather compete while rebuilding and possibly making the playoffs and or not making the playoffs and possibly going into the superbowl with what we had than WAITING FOR THE LOOOOONG HAUL! IT'S NATURAL. we were never pretty to begin with. we are x-ray, not green and gold. whats the use of the green and gold being in it every season if they can't win the superbowl. if i had some words for the new era RAIDER nation, it would be, dooon't loook at that ligggghht!
listen captain, i still have hopes.if the quick turnaround isn't this season again? i still got hopes for the next season "again". by then, i can call it a quick turnaround "if" it's better by then!

The Draft is only one element of success. It is not the cure all. The truth is that most teams build through the draft, year in and year out, without success.

i can understand the matt flynn trade. i mean, green bay ties right? nah naugh, not saying flynn is going to fail, he's just Not a proven (qb). which is fine i mean, who knows what future lies for him here. if he came from green bay he's got to be the best right? okay, good enough. glad we still have "most of our offense intact.
with a new DE, or whatever we are planning in the draft, plus new guys we may get plus the guys we picked up, 4-12? i don't know why i'm thinking more like 6-10 or 7-9 and more in hopes of an 8-8 just to get back on track.
