Film "Soul Food Junkies" Examines African American Cuisine and Culture

Jun 25, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: KQED

Are these a cherished part of African American culture or a recipe for an early death? The answer is both, as last Thursday's West Coast premiere of Byron Hurt 's movie Soul Food Junkies vividly demonstrated.

Soul food is good, but I dont eat it like that, maybe once every two weeks. I snack a lot, but I work out. Ain't nothing like some fried chicken with hot sauce once in a while.

there is nothing wrong with the food we eat ok? it is something wrong with the hormones and steriods being put into the food that we are making are dishes with and this is the problem; not our food!!!

black folk in the early days ate nothing but "soulfood" which is all they had and they were WAY healthier then their todays counterparts.

now, i do think we should all kick the pork, which is obviously and widely known to be detrimental to blk folks health but everything else is ok.

when frying foods, use coconut, corn or even olive oil.

i don't hear no one else making studies about how "hazardous" other peoples foods are to them so why bark so much on the foods we have traditionally eaten?

Junk food is WORSE!

If you even go INTO a franchise fast-food joint (Wendys, Mickey D's, Booger King, Taco Hell, KY fried Rodents, any of them) you're committing slow suicide.

Soul food at least has a basis in real cuisine, but one has to watch out for all the fat and sugar...

Yanks eat WAY too much meat!

Oh yeah, there's a whole school of thought about Mexican food, this is in Mexico, saying that it is deadly. The Spanish brought their cows and pigs with them, and now everything is cooked in LARD. Not good. The indigenous Mexican food pre-Cortés was healthy. Lots of amaranth, corn, etc. Less fatty meat. Their meat was turkeys and deer mostly.

Look at the traditional white Yank food... big slabs of meat, potato covered with butter... way too much meat. It is also not healthy.

You have a point about “soul food” in the past... it was on the farm, more natural. The chemicals and hormones are deadly, yep.

Still, Dragonrat, tell the truth, doesn't your butt look like an old beanbag chair? Come on, the TRUTH!

Which reminds me... wouldn't it be cool if someone started making available traditional African cuisine? Unlike most of you Yank wanks, I have eaten such food. OMG the things they can do with peanuts over there! They are really good in stews, etc.

I am very interested in expanding the variety of traditional crops we grow... instead of hybrids and GMO crap... and I discovered there are a LOT of cool food plants in Africa. A friend of mine sent me some chile and okra seeds from Kano, Nigeria. Great stuff.

Most people know that okra and watermelon came from West African people, but there are dozens of other things they grow there we don't even see in the USA.

This is true of anyplace, but many of you have ancestry in W Africa, and I think it would be cool to see that food more in the USA.

The issue isn't food, it's the lack of moderation. Too much of anything is not good. Too much exercise is not good, too much sleep is not good, etc yet all these things have benefits when done in moderation.

This is TRUE. The FDA add in extra sugar, salt, etc often over exceeding the normal limit found in natural unprocessed foods.

The big issue right now, I think, is GMO foods and other unnatural practices such a irradiation, adding hormones, feeding cows the remains of other cows, feedlots stomach-deep in manure, antibiotic-soaked feed, etc.

I hate Cortes for what he did in Mexico. All those beautiful cities, palaces, and pieces of art destroyed. I wish I can go to his tomb and piss on it.

Commercial meat isn't as good. I'm trying to transition to wild meat, then I'll eat less of it. Around here of course there are deer, jabalinas, turkeys, quail... and the occasional Republican for a change of pace.

Turkeys are slow. The last one I ate, I killed with a stick. I was chasing the turkey, and when I got close enough, swung and HOME RUN!!! Right in the head. That was good turkey.

You can also eat grasshoppers, best sautéed, good with soy sauce. In Africa, kids will jump into the air, snatch a locust and eat it alive. I still want mine cooked...
