Do they eat turkey in Turkey?

So, as I was testing ideas and bouncing topics off of my bride for this column , I thought about turkey ... ya know, gobble, gobble, standard yard bird, Butterball, once-a-year, star of the season, lean protein, L-tryptophan rich, turkey.

Todd, in Turkish the Turkey is called Hindi, that's it Indian.

Dear Chef Todd: I enjoyed your article. It seems you've managed to find some of fascinating historical information regarding Turkey. I highly recommend reading a couple of books; some of the old history such as the Lord of the Horizons by Jason Goodwin, Sons of the Conquerors by Hugh Pope or Crestcent and Star by Stephen Kinzer for more contemporary history. Timeless Tastes would probably be the one book you should look into - its about the culinary history of Turkey by Semahat Arsel. As for the main question of "do Turks eat Turkey" yes - plump american-style turkeys are raised, sold and consumed in Turkey and but they are not called "turkeys", they go by the name of hindi, after the guineafowl that came to Turkey from India. Alas in the new world the bird was named Turkey but in the old world it was named hindi.......either way everyone enjoys a good plump Turkey/Hindi dinner whatever its origin maybe.....Ayse
