I have been buying strictly Organic whole milk for several months now. I have tried many different brands and noticed that whenever I remove the cap from the 1/2 gallon carton, there is an unpleasant smell. Once the milk is in the glass, after a few seconds the smell is gone and the milk tastes great. Does anyone else notice this or know why there is a smell?

Is the milk pasteurized? Processed milk (homogenized and pasteurized) really isn't even milk. Try for raw, local, grass fed milk only otherwise you may as well not drink the stuff. Processed milk is actually bad for you.
Also, I wonder if it is the same brand you are buying, could be the packaging they are using. Plastic is toxic any way you look at it and it does off-gas into your milk.
Organic dairy producers still use strong chemicals to wash their milk tanks and pipelines. I once had a carton of non-organic milk smell so strongly of bleach there was no way I could have evn considered consuming it.

If you do continue to buy processed milk, put it in a glass jar (like a mason jar with a lid) when you get it home from the store. But really, I strongly encourage you to find local, raw, organic. Atleast go online and do some research on the harms of pasteurized/homogenized milk.

i think it's the algal oil that causes the off smell. i have been drinking Horizon organic 2% and noticed the smell. will have to try another brand.

I also drink organic milk and we should be careful while buying organic milk, if it is not well preserved then it can cause diarrhea and other kind of disease.

I have noticed that organic lactose free and, and Lactaid milk both have peculiar smells that get worse over time (We buy the fat-free type). From reading comments around the internet, it is obvious that others have noticed the same thing.
The smell is particularly noticeable within the confines of the container.

Some cartons, probably those that have not been kept cold enough during shipping and storage, have sides that bulge outwards. You probably have seen this. Others do not, or have minimum 'bulging'.

I have consistently found that the 'bulgy' ones smell worse when opened and get worse faster over several days in the fridge. I buy only containers that are not bulging. None of this stuff lasts more than a few days once opened.

There is little doubt in my mind that these effects are caused by bacteria in the milk. It also appears there is an ongoing issue with cow dung getting into, and contaminating, our milk supply. Duh ...

I have contacted both an organic milk producing group
(Organic Valley) and the Lactaid Milk producers about these issues. Both deny that any of their sample stock in quality control has any of these issues. They claim to be unable to duplicate the smell. Since every single carton I buy DOES have the smell issue, I do not believe what they are saying.

In my opinion, there is a problem and the milk producers have simply decided that it is easier and more profitable to ignore/deny the issue than to address it.

It is certainly a problem with controlling quality as in my case it depends on the batches. They might be dealing with different suppliers and some farms could be having some hygiene issues. Since milk in my state is almost an oligopoly, no one can exercise choice-power to improve quality. If anyone knows any brand with superior quality that would have helped.

Stony-fields milk and Horizon organic milk smells bad; I find them hard to drink. I've moved on to Trader Joe's organic milk without the stink, this milk is very good i love it and drink a lot of it. I highly recommend it over the other organic milk with a foul smell.

Funny you say that. I have very recently noticed a strange almost chemical taste from my organic milk. I've been drinking organic milk for several years and this has only started. Very strange!
