Good job Dennis! I used to live on Gershom Ave. and remmember everything you described to a t. I played ball on that court and new George and Father Bourgeois very well. If you write another article on Paw. move up the street and visit Martins Variety and the activities of St. J'en Darc. and it's old cyo and basketball court. I lived and hung around there in the late fifties and early sixties and we had some great times. We had a few names also Couch, PT. and Tank and Big Ray. Three of those four are gone now.

Great Write-Up, Dennis.

I also think of the 70's nostalgically, remembering skipping school, smoking dope, eating mescaline and drinking copious amounts of alcohol as a Chelmsford high sophomore at U lowell spring fling, watching tower of power and taking liberties with a College girl. Ah yes, Those were the day's! And to think years later the same school would grant me an advanced degree.

I remember shoveling driveways for money so I could play in Bates arcade, then I'd get a sub from Astros, walk up the street and get soda and candy from either Culberts or Martins convenience stores. The building next to the old basketball court used to have a big spraypainted Eddie from Iron Maiden on it, it scared me when I was a kid.

wow it was funny to hear those names from the Pawtucketville social club. I knew and know some of them. Great article!

Dennis, I enjoyed you're piece:
A walk down Nostalgia Lane -- er, University Ave. Bravo zulu = Well Done!! |

Entertaining piece. Brought back many of my late 60s memories of Pawtucketville. You neglected to mention Lena's Sub Shop. I still wonder to this day why the street didn't develop even more shops and diners . . . eg Thayer St in Providence or even Harvard Sq.

I seem to be a little younger but if you travel up the avenue, you could find Guilbeault's Mkt that had the real penny candy (and so many Valentine candy boxes). Martins had the best beans on a Saturday night for the mandatory Pawtucketville dinner of franks & beans. Boucher's market had the best meat and the friendliest brothers who owned it.
Thanks for the memories. |

Dennis great article and truly nostalgic. I too know many of the characters and spent most of my late 60's playing and running those leagues. Don't forget the hero "Monk" who used to always manage to get us the keys for lights.
