I grew up on a small dairy farm in in Minnesota (US), very poor. During the summer, as kids, us boys would get a military, short cropped haircut, put our shoes away, and and run around barefoot until school started in the fall -- unless of course we were visiting neighbours or had to go into town. One of my favourite things to do was to collect agates along side the gravel roads that criss-crossed the landscape in a sparse but precisely surveyed grid. Due to the geology of Minnesota left by the last ice age, agates were abundant and could be found in an array of spectacular hues and of enormous size. My dad in his youth had found one the size of a bowling ball, by far the largest that had ever been found in our county, so perhaps the knack for finding them runs in the family?
In any case, I had to be careful to stay out of the way of the gigantic tractor that 'graded' the roads to keep them level and compact, and especially I had to watch out of the way of the Swensen truck which would barrel down the roads at maniac speeds delivering ice cream, door to door, to the rich farmers in the area and the well to do folks who lived in town. Our family was much too poor to have the icecream truck deliver to us, or anyone who i knew, but I always imagined that I would grow up one day and order it for myself.
Sadly, much as with the rest of life, things don't always turn out as you expect. I now live in San Francisco and can select any number of cuisines on line for deliver or take out and now and even order from Amazon's new grocery service. Yet Swensons is still unavailable and after all these years, I still have no idea what it tastes like.
