Sep 5, 2007 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Press-Enterprise

Sherri Anderson, of Riverside, came to the rescue of Shelley Moore, also of Riverside, who was searching for a chile relleno recipe similar to the one from the former Gay and Larry's Mexican Restaurant in ... via Press-Enterprise

Like so many others, I grew up eating at Gay & Larry's. I was there the last day to eat their wonderful food for the last time. I spoke with Trudy, and she had me sign a list for a cookbook she would be publishing in the future! Does anyone know how to reach here?I moved to Colorado since signing up?

It was tradition to go to gay and larrys almost weekly when i was pregnant with my daughtor i would go order chips and cheese and 4 or 5 reanus and reheat them for the week and heat them up to handle my cravings. with my second daughtor i lived closer which meant fresh reanu's... now well now i have a serious problem.... as you guessed it i am once again in need yes that need of gay and larrys and am desperately seeking the salsa recipe. for the person that asked what the flavor in their tacos that was so good, it was cumin. i am waiting for the infamous recipe book as well anyone with news on any recipes please please please send them to jami4respiratory@hotmail.com thanks.....

just read your post as i was searching for gay and larry's recipes. just the other day in the press enterprise i found the following recipe for the chile rellenos. haven't tried them yet, but will soon. here goes:

1 27 oz. can ortega whole green chiles (12-14 per can)
3 c. Krusteaz Complete Buttermilk Pancake mix
2 cups water
12-14 1/2" by 2 1/4" strips velveeta cheese
1/2 cup cornstarch
Drain chiles, lay on paper towel, pat dry. Mix pancake mix with water--it will be thick. Place cheese inside chile, dredge in cornstarch and dip in batter covering whole chile. Deep fry about two minutes at 375.

My family and I enjoyed Gay & Larry's for more years than I can count. In the 1950's my parents stopped there for dinner on their way to San Bernardino to give birth to me!!We always chose this restaurant as a "special" place. Since I come from a family of 4 kids, we spent many graduations, birthdays, weddings...you name it we found a reason. The 4 generation tradition continued as myself, my brothers and sister all raised families and still ate there until they closed down. I now live in Florida and as beautiful as it is here, I would take a flight in a minute if I could have a #1A on a hot plate...not to mention chips & cheese and extra salsa!!! By the way, the receipe listed for the chile rellenos is excellent and very close to the original. I would love to see a recipe book and would like to give a big thank you to Trudy for many years of happy memories.

I am the "sister" in Diane's comment. Each time we got our braces tightened, the only thing we could eat was soup so the albondigas was the greatest!! We miss you guys and I want to personnaly thank you for the great memories you gave our family.

I ate at gay and larrys since the early 40s. The chili rellenos were incredable and thanks to you will try and recreate them. Would love to find out about the tacos and the homemade hot sauce. My e-mail is gai1959@aol.com

I am looking for Gay n Larry's salsa receipe. My parents would take me there since I was a baby in the 70's. I started the traditon with my children. I was sad to see our favorite weekly restaurant go.

My husband and I, also, were long-time regulars at Gay & Larry's and our orders always included chile rellenos. They were incredibly delicious and the quality consistant. Never found any remotely similar. When we moved to Kentucky in 2006, we had to try to duplicate them. I finally tried a batter recipe that we use for deep-fried artichokes. It's almost identical to lori'a recipe. Except ours calls for Bisquick. Also, our favorite waitress did tell us that the cheese was "Kraft cheese in the blue box", which turned out to be Velveeta Deluxe, which has a firmer texture than the regular Velveeta.

The secret to Gay and Larry's was American cheese. Nothing special, your just used to cheddar. My Grandmother used to get huge blocks of the stuff from some government entity (she learned this in the 50's). I never liked the food, but the family tradition haunts me to this day.

Everything tastes good deep fried ... everything.

The salsa was terrible, the meat all bland. This is Mexican cuisine gone horribly awry.

I can't help but wonder what the combination was that led to the cult following of this place. My father cried when it closed.

I Googled "Gay & Larry's" for fun and came across this site. As so many have mentioned, I grew up in Riverside, and G&L's was a family tradition. The interesting thing about the place is that it was owned by gringos and was not particularly authentic. But, man, the food was great, authentic or not! I too loved the Chile Rellenos, which were, in all their deep-fried, Velveeta filled glory, were a wonderful guilty pleasure. I remember the introduction of Velveeta (mid 50s?) so I wonder what they used before that. Probably just regular american cheese.
I moved from Riverside in 1978, and every visit back had to include a stop at G&L's. I once took a number of Rellenos home and froze them, but it just wasn't the same. They had to be eaten fresh from the frier. I no longer have any family left in Riverside, and so, with the demise of G&L's several years back, there is no longer any reason to go back. But what memories!

Hi Travis,
Our family has been a devoted fan of your Grandma's Gay and Larry's resturant. It goes back to my grandparents love for the place back in the 60's up to our generation until it closed. I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandma, Trudy and wish her the very best! I am pregnant with our first baby and gosh am craving those chips and cheese and beef tacos. Is there anyway, when you have a free moment to msg the receipe of the chips and cheese and beef tacos. I'm glad to hear that it is American cheese that was used...this was a big bak and forth debate with family and friends and am glad to put it to rest that it was american cheese lol. Thanks so much in advance for the reply and again wish your grandma best wishes. God Bless.

There was a lot wrong with that hell hole. The back room sat over a old ceptic tank, thats why the floor would crack and give way when you walked on it. Imagine if that floor gave way when there was a party of 10 at that back table by the window?

The county wouldn't let Trudy sell, because there was too many code violations that they "grandfathered" in since the establishment (used VERY loosely) was so old, and NO ONE WANTED THE JOINT due to the cost of improvements that were needed. Trudy even threatened the kitchen staff that if they "took" her recipes and used them at ANY other restaurant she would turn them into the INS (seeing that it was a INS nightmare in back, and a majority of the kitchen staff were illegals).

One good thing about working there was the fact the head hostess was a whore. Bathroom, kitchen, storage room, back by the payphone, anywhere she could she'd give it up.

Trudy is a cold hearted, self centered, ruthless bitch. She would sell her own familys soul for profit. She never took care of her staff, the good staff only worked there for ONE reason. THEIR customer base. Majority of the people came in to see the GREAT waitresses, the food was secondary.

Some people gave their heart and soul to that cess pool, only to get walked on by Trudy when they couldnt benefit her.

And as for her idiotic grandson Travis? He is just following in grandma's ways. He drained Trudy for her money growing up. Drugs, jail, theft, running up her phone bill with 900 numbers, Travis did it all. The safe was ALWAYS missing money when Travis was a busboy. The waitresses knew a idiot, always sticking his nose into "grown up business". Made his grandmother look a fool to the patrons of the place many a time.

He finally cost Trudy her home after causing the fire that destroyed the place. All Trudy's precious horse trophies, pictures, EVERYTHING gone.
Good job Travis, good job.

As for the chips and cheese recipe? Its simple, put cheese on chips and bake.

Its like asking how to boil water.
