I went to Kathy John's once, in 1982. I'm still recovering. Aside from the food poisoning, which left me lipless and limbless, there is the mental trauma of being subject to all that right wing kitsch.

Is that what happened to the men's basketball team that year? Your as phoney as they come with your remark.

My memories of Kathy John's are largely warm and friendly.
There was just one period since it opened when I did not go--when the smoking just got too much for me (the non-smoking section was too small and right next to smoking!) Once the state changed the law re no-smoking in restaurants, I very happily went back.
I have enjoyed the place with its old-timey music and atmosphere. Favorite memories would include buying gifts for my nieces, getting a tiny slice of fudge on my way out in place of a big dessert, a milkshake after visiting the dentist, a warm cup of soup and tea on a cold winter's night. Gathering with friends, or eating alone, it has been a wonderful place.

Now that's a terrible thing to say to a lipless, limbless victim of the Kathy John's Hodgepodge Ice Cream Cookie, still clogging my intestines even after years of eating nothing but Drano and Fiber One for breakfast.

What a shame. I'm afraid the next time I come visit family in CT, none of my old favorites will be around anymore.

It's too bad the owner did not have a final goodbye "sale" of sorts. Let people stop in for one last burger or sundae; I bet she also could have sold alot of the trinkets in the gift shop as well.
Too bad another Walgreens is going up there. This corner will look like all the others in CT....
They did have a sale in the gift shop... seemed to last a couple of months. Much of it sold...
My sons, now grown and living in Manhattan, were so sad when I told them. We have wonderful memories there.

I worked at Kathy Johns for over a year. The entire staff was either addicted to some drug or recovering from it. The place was far less than sanitary- no one ever washed their hands. I was mortified working there. They illegally disposed of the cooking grease in the dumpster because they didn't want to pay for proper removal, and the permanent general manager was being paid almost entirely under the table so she could maintain her section 8 housing. Kathy and John who own it are terrible people, just terrible. I remember going there as a child and loving it, but as soon as I started working there I never ate the food again. I'm glad to see it tanked.

After reading what Yuck had to say it indicates that the ownership let the place slide downward. In better times the place was a must do stop for those visiting the area and UCONN.

But apparently times changed and change is not always a good thing.

Working for Poles Syrup & Paper Co., I did business with Kathy & John from the day they opened. I sold the printed napkins, cups & other items. I also did business with KJS at West Farms Mall in West Hartford.

I bought a cheeseburger in 1982 and left it unfinished on my plate. When I returned twenty years later, it was still there.

I was a customer at Kathy John's for almost 30 years, as a child, as a UCONN student, as a landlord of an area property, and as a UCONN parent. Unfortunately in the past few years the experience was not as positive as it had been. The building was clearly run-down and the staff not overly interested in cleanliness. Our last visit was when we moved our son in for his freshman year in August and I was rather disappointed. But I did have tears in my eyes when I drove by and discovered it was closed and immediately called my mom to tell her.

Dear Sy,
I used to work for Schrier Brothers and called on Mr. Poles weekly from 1978 to 1984. I remember you. I would appreciate it if you could inform me what became of Mr. Poles and Poles Syrup on Capen St. Also, Mr. Meyers and Ann.

Thank you! I'm glad to see someone else has realized this as well..... UCONN is in Mansfield and evryone get's the municipality incorrect!
The same goes for the Eastbrook Mall, Staples Plaza, McDonalds and Champagne Chevy..... All in Mansfield yet - being geographically closer to Willimantic, uses their zipcode.... This error of assumption has become SOOOO bad now that even Kenny and Kile Champagne print their Champagne Chevy Ads as being from "Willimantic" as well..........Note to Champagne Brothers: If your business were really in Willimantic, your property value would be FAR, FAR less in than it currently is. Your insurance would also be far more expensive due to the high crime rate......be PROUD you are in Mansfield and NOT Willimantic.... Correct your ads)
Thanks for your advice. However, I want you to know that Willimantic is listed as our business address because that is our official mailing address, and consequently, our official registered business address with the government and state. The other businesses you mentioned are the same.....Ken Champagne

Kathy Johns is no more. As of 2 weeks ago, both it and the Texaco Gas Station right next to it have been torn down. They are putting in a huge Cumberland Farms Gas Station plaza there in its place.

About being proud a business is in Mansfield and not Willimantic, clearly that person hasn't visited Main Street in Willimantic and hasn't seen all the inventive new businesses, including "A Cupcake for Later" and "Cafemantic" and Fred's new Blues restaurant, not to mention the art galleries and the very popular Third Thursday Street Festival that draws thousands of people from all around this region. Willimantic has its problems, but it also has its bright spots and a lot of hard-working, intelligent and imaginative people who are constantly reinventing this little city. I lived in Mansfield for 28 years before moving to Willimantic (where I subsequently founded a community garden in my neighborhood that's done very well)- from my porch I can see the Frog Bridge, a pavilion where they hold the farmer's market, and I walk my dog on the Greenway that runs right by my house -- there is a LOT to love and be proud of in Willimantic!

I will miss their hodge podge soup; would have stocked up if I knew for sure they were leaving!(I asked when I saw their 40%-off sale, but was not told they were closing.)
Does anyone have the recipe, or can re-contruct the ingredients? I remember tasty bits of beef, corn and other vegetables, and a wonderful broth.
Anyone else have the recipe/remember ingredients?
The closest I've come is 2 cans of progreso minstrone, a small can of corn. Bring to a boil. Add 1 lb rare ground beef ( I break it up in tiny pieces). Reduce heat and simmer for 30 mins. Even better reheated the next day,
