That's a shame. When our son was going to UConn Kathy Johns was frequent stop for us. The food was always good and the service was too. Another victim of the economy I guess.

They're going to pave paradise and put up a parking lot...and a Walgreens. Yeah, I know it said there were only discussions. But when CVS is on one corner, Walgreens isn't far behind. This is simply sad--it reads like a money grab to me. But hey, isn't that how things work these days?

The decline of KathyJohn's has been hard to watch. From unenthusiastic help to greasy benches, to food that looked like it was dropped on the floor before being presented, it was no place to take friends, especially not Mom on Sunday.
Everything has its day, and KJ's was long gone. Spring is a time for renewal. Let's hope someone with an adventuresome spirit can revitalize the fading 4 Corners with something for both the kids and the community.

This is sad. When I was a child we went to Kathy John's after our dance recitals. As an adult I brought my children there after special events. We will miss Kathy John's.

It was sad to see the decline but how can you feel good about another mega pharmacy coming to town.

YOU ARE SO WRONG WITH YOUR COMMENTS. I FREQUENTED KJ FOR 14 YEARS WHILE I WORKED IN ASHFORD. I never saw any of which you are describing. This establishment was the heart and soul of vacationers, college students and the families who live in the area. Sorry to see you go KJ - The changing times are the management of our future. Not good.

I thought something was up the other night. I was out cycling, and rode past KJ's, and the lights were off and the parking lot was empty.

Sad to see them go. The unique little places are hurting, too, I guess.

Your experience was clearly different from mine. I was a student at UConn from 1999-2003 and went to Kathy John's precisely - once when I was a freshman and my parents took me. The consensus after the meal was that we would never return. The service was poor, the food was questionable, and it was full of kitsch (the Beanie Babies and other junk)- and this was a decade ago! I don't know of any of my friends at UConn who went to eat there, either.

Most students went to Bidwell Tavern, Willington Pizza, Chuck's & Margarita's (which I understand is no longer operated by the same company), and the like when we wanted a sit-down meal. It was far more common to order pizza or DP Dough, or go to Ted's for food. College students generally lack the funds for a sit-down meal, and when they do have money they're not going to flock to a place like Kathy John's.

It's too bad the owner did not have a final goodbye "sale" of sorts. Let people stop in for one last burger or sundae; I bet she also could have sold alot of the trinkets in the gift shop as well.

Too bad another Walgreens is going up there. This corner will look like all the others in CT....

like all other small mom and pop retail businesses, they can't keep up with the rising costs of overhead and survive on customers who come for icecream twice a year.

My family and I used to stop at Kathy Johns at least once every two weeks for years, however, the last couple of times we were there, we noticed a huge difference in cleanliness and just stopped going, too bad.

I'll agree with you that this KJ's and the one that was in the Eastbrook Mall weren't the cleanest, but they did have a great soda selection (i.e. green lemon-lime) to make up for it.
