Cionko's Meat Market in Granite City: 'You walk in here, and they know your name'

Nov 19, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Belleville News Democrat

They grind their own hamburger, slice their own bacon, blend their own sausage and brats, roast their own Italian beef, bake their own hams and butcher their own chicken, pork and beef.

Best bacon around. Their steaks are heads and shoulders above the brine soaked crap you get at the grocery store. Cheaper too.

We used to get our ground beef from there, but after the last few lbs we bought turned brown literally overnight, we get sams club 90% ground beef. Per lb it is cheaper than anything around here, and fresher too.

So +1 for sams club

Sam's clubs ammonia treats their beef and soaks it in brine so it absorbs the salt water and swells. When you cook it all the water comes out and it shrinks up.

So if you like paying for about 20% salt water that has been soaked into your meat and you like the smell and taste of the ammonia treatment they use to kill bacteria because their processing plants are so disgustingly filthy, then by all means.

Anyone that purchases meat from these "non union" large scale grocers such as Walsuck and Sam's, have no idea what they're purchasing. Aside from ammonia they also use Carbon Monoxide to keep the meat from browning. Cionko's is top-notch meat, with great service. Your also supporting local business. Sorry dude,-10 for Sams!

I have rarely bought meat at grocery stores. So I've purchased meat from Cionko's on a weekly basis for years and I honestly can't remember getting anything bad from there. They are the best.

We used to order meat orders from Cionko's all the time. The last time we ordered from them, not one but TWO flies were frozen into our pork steaks. By the time we go them out of the freezer, Cionko's was closed. I called the next day and they wanted me to bring them in. Um, we didn't keep that crap. We threw it away. GROSS!!!

I love that the guys sing while they work. They always offer my daughter a treat and offer to carry out my packages to the car. I give them an A+

spend enough time there at Cionko's, and you will learn the health inspectors first name, they get cited every month, and push the envelope for unsanitary practice, have any of you ever seen the cleaning the saws, and slicers there ?

not only is it amazing they are still in business, but it is amazing how folks line up like sheep to buy their lesser cuts of meat that should be in dog food

If you know so much about the place, you must spend quite a lot of time there. So you must be a disgruntled employee??

I'm not crazy about Leroy's either. You find a lot of out of date stuff on their shelves. If I'm going to buy a large quantity of meat, I'll go to Novacich's.
