The US State Dept. does not recommend that Americans avoid Colombia at all costs!! What the State Dept. says is simply a warning to stay out of areas where guerillas are present and to be careful in urban areas, especially at night, which is basically the same warning you could give to anyone visiting the US and most other countries.
