<quoted text>I know what you're saying. I guess what I am asking in above comment is irrelevant to this story. I am asking why its illegal to scavenge for items people willingly discard. Not peoples' private property like in a fire, or an old rusted car. These are items people did not willingly discard, and obviously taking them should be illegal.
Its because a lot of people would sift through other peoples trash nefariously looking for things like old documents with credit and banking statements or tax documents with SS#'s on them. That type of stuff is worth a lot too an illegal immigrant trying to steal an identity.

The woman who let it be known to the Press that she was looking for $3,700.00 in cash and jewls stashed in her bedroom is an idiot. This probobly encouraged many criminals to swarm the area. I still can not believe that she held those things over the lives of her animals. Get a grip. In the Santa Cruz Sentinel she now says that she is going to sue the city. Is this person from our planet? I think not!

thats a good point actually, illigal immigrants probably would do whatever it takes to stay here, stealing social security numbers from the trash or whatever,i wouldnt put anything past them, most of their culture is criminal activitys like gangs and stuff, why do you think they outnumber everyone else in jails and prisons?their own government is so corrupt, its not even funny.

I never understood why people who need them don't simply make up a SS number. Do they get validated? If so, won't the validation process reveal the names don't match?

But on the other hand, why is it illegal to steal garbage? I don't mean any disrespect to the victims by any means. I understand the looting in an emergency bit. But like how the whole garbage can looting is illegal too. Why? If you throw something out, its clearly useless to you, so why is it illegal if someone wants to sift through your crap for some goodies?
It's still private property and belongs to property owner. These people have gone through an enormous tragedy and shouldn't be forced to worry about looters on top of what they are going through right now.

As far as going through someone's personal garbage can goes.... if it's curbside on the street, it's not illegal to go through. It's on a public street and while annoying and unsettling, it isn't illegal for someone to go through. In fact, police investigators often use this method when they are trying to obtain information or DNA from a suspect. So, make sure you SHRED, SHRED, SHRED all personal information because anyone can go through it and use that information for illegal purposes.

For those of you who think it is legitimate to go on someone's property and "sift" through people's garbage, you can all f*** off....THAT IS MY PROPERTY AND MY HOME!!!! My house was inches away from getting destroyed, and to think that there are people who are willing to take advantage of the situation and come on MY land and STEAL from ME.... you have no idea what's coming to you!! These two men are being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and I intend on making sure that happens.... watch yourself people... don't even try to f*** with me, my family, my property, or my garbage!!
