Okay for BBQ in Texas...(12+/ 0-)

...you MUST, MUST, MUST try Underwoods Cafeteria in Brownwood, Texas. It's about 2 1/2 hours from Austin. I die thinking about their food. The meat is great, the all you can eat tools that melt in your month are great, the free cobbler is awesome. The food there is simply excellent!!! It has been voted among the best places in the United States. People from all over the nation go to Brownwood just to eat at Underwoods!:-)

I don't understand why you would respond to my previous post like this. I don't have anything against popular restaurants and I did not even indicate anything along those lines. Why so defensive?
All I said was an agreement with the original thread post that I don't care for the food at this place. The meat is not good, the vegetables taste like they are canned and/or way overcooked, the cobbler does not have fresh fruit in it.
Regarding your post= I eat at lots of popular restaurants all the time. Sorry if I offended you by saying I don't like the food ad Underwoods. Have a nice day.
Help Save Lake Brownwood by eating more California "canned vegetables" !

I agree- it's not real BBQ and I've never understood why people always associate Brownwood with Underwoods. I guess everyone has to pass by it when driving through town. Smitty's BBQ is way better. Underwoods makes me actually sick aft

My question to you is if you'd eaten at Underwoods for over 40 years, do you remember a gravy-like sauce? It wasn't their BBQ sauce. The gravy was rendered from cooking the brisket, then spices added along with I think vinegar. I used to buy their chopped beef along with the gravy. I would make an opened face chopped BBQ sandwich with the gravy on top. No one seems to remember! I found a small place in Gainesville TX, that the owner was Underwoods family member. He knew what I referred to and served it there. He died and I've never been able to find it again. They should have bottled that gravy! I thought it was delicious!

I don't recall that gravy. But speaking of "gravy", have you tried the special white sauce at Steve's Market and Deli?

I like the chicken, but the bar-b-q is not real baroo-b-q. It's too expensive and the service has gone downhill since Leonard retired. We got rolls the other day for a family meal after a funeral, and none of them were done in the middle...still doughy and cold on the middle! For chicken I'll go to Chicken Express..more affordable and just as good. For real BBQ, Smitty's gets my vote!

No matter how downhill the food goes at Underwood's, it will always be better than the stale trash served up at Steves Market & Deli.

I have never eaten at Steve's, so I would not know what the good is like there. You seem like a pretty petty person with that comment, though.

Brownwood does not have decent barbeque restaurants. Smitty's is undesirable on many levels. Sticks is average at best. Underwoods is a better restaurant than most in Brownwood, but it is not barbeque. It is a cafeterial. Try eating at Kreuz's in Lockhart if you want real barbecue.
