Fast-food workers in NYC stage strikes, rallies

Jul 29, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Republic

Workers at McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's restaurants across New York walked out Monday in a one-day strike to demand better pay and the right to unionize, calling for minimum wage to more than double from $7.25 to $15 an hour and the end to what activists called "abusive labor practices."

Wake up!!

Hard work in a low-skill job doesn't command a lot of money, nor does it command a lot of respect. It is what it is.

Learn to WORK SMARTER, not harder.

Smart people get paid a lot more than people only capable of flipping burgers.

you can save the state tax dollars by buying your food off the dollar menu where you work....why do you need food stamps anyway, don't your parents support you??? or at least feed you...

<quoted text>Everyone with a job and wants to keep it works hard everyday ... this is what your employer pays you for. If your skills set goes no further than the broom or the fryer, you do not deserve more than minimum wage (if you deserve that).

Losers like Joe want to be rewarded for their sloth and lack of education, on par with those who worked to improve their work situation beyond just showing up.

Becoming self sufficient does not entail being paid for skills that you do not have or are beyond the market value of such skills. Just because you see importance in your position at the register at McD's does not mean that the rest of the world or employers see it that way.

Once again the losers look for a way to live off the backs of the productive in this country.
My advice to you is learn some kindness and empathy. Go talk to your priest. I'm sure he could help.

Usually I do, but today the Rolls is in the shop. No problems with the car, just rotating the air in the tires.

I'll have some grey poupon flown in from Jersey if you got a real hankering...

You want fries with that?

I started out my career at a McDonald's; I lasted 31 days.
I was paid less than minimum wage because MickeyD's paid for my food on my break ($2 maximum for food). What a ripoff!
They were teaching me that a lifetime career at MickeyD's wasn't gonna be meaningful. I learned quick and got out.

Nothing's changed at McDonald's except the patrons are getting humongous.

Maybe you should see a counselor and learn some personal responsibility and motivation. It would help most, but you may be beyond help.

What's even funnier is Joe's belief that because I expect personal responsibility from him that I lack kindness and empathy.

Translation: Joe believes that if you don't agree with his position of being the victim in his own life, one must be a horrible person.

Yep.
Since when did working at a fast food joint become a career decision?
Not so long ago it was all part time high school and college kids and the occasional adult trying to earn a few extra bucks.

Yes, I graduated from a public school district. What does that have to do with fast-food workers fighting for a living wage?

Not because you're a brainiac, that's for sure!

"For parents this quickly translates into the bad news: high tuition costs and sometimes an exhausting work calendar of parent-sponsored fundraisers. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for their member private day schools in 2008-2009 in the United States was $17,441. Tuition for boarding schools was close to $37,017.(Of the 28,384 private schools in the United States, about 1,050 are affiliated with the NAIS. Average tuition for nonmember schools is substantially less: Day schools charge $10,841 and boarding schools $23,448.)

Or in other words, the majority of you on these FREE boards can NOT afford a private or charter school, so stop patting yourself on the back. The answer for most is quite obvious.

Don't sweat these fools Joe - the ones with the biggest mouths always have the least, and look down on others only HERE because they can remain anonymous, but not one of these idiots would go into one of those establishments and say this crap to ANY of those workers faces, not ONE!

Always easy to be an internet warrior.

And you made a valid point before Joe - a friend of mine, who's son graduated with a degree in chemistry, is currently working at a Starbucks. Many stories very similar to this one.
