There were a lot of people getting chili who didn't purchase a wristband. I didn't pay eighteen bucks just to watch a bunch of losers eat bad chili for free. I did however, get a nice case of food poisoning...

Doesn't Johnny Pinches look right at home sitting there with a dozen containers of chili in front of him.

Yeah..you couldn't pay me to eat that stuff.

CHili being slow-cooked on a hot day...and a lack of soap/water..sounds like a nasty recipe for disaster

Yes, and soaking the beans three days prior to cooking doesn't sound like a good idea, even if there was a walk-in cooler available in which to hold them. Are participants required to follow any safety rules and is there any oversight provided?

The contestants are given food safety guidelines to follow when preparing and storing the chili. All of the chilis are prepared offsite and come to the event completely cooked. The chilis are only brought up to temp and kept warm at the event.

Food poisoning is a possibility EVERYWHERE and EVERYTIME you eat out. This event has been quite successful for the past 10 years, benefiting the Boys and Girls Club. I doubt this event would be able to continue if food poisoning was truly an issue.

I myself was happy to participate in this event, I found the competitors to be sanitary, I myself brought a bottle of sanitizer, a sanitizing bucket and rag, and a food thermometer. This event brings money for a good cause! I won spiciest chili but the real reward was knowing that money was being sent to a good cause!
