local who eats out a lot wrote:
My family eats out in Bennington at least once every week. Last time we walked into Tally's, we walked out because there was no one there to greet us. Before that, we walked in for dinner, were seated, and then ignored for 15 minutes by our waiter who was making small talk with another table that had already paid its check, so we left. Last Sunday we drove by (on our way to Peppermills) and saw cars, and thought about it for a minute and just said forget it. The service has been so viciously bad in this restaurant that I don't know if I will ever go in again. The food can be great, but if you can't get the attention of a waiter, or can't get a water refill, then it is NOT "fine dining." I almost felt cheated that we could not go in and enjoy this beautiful building. Good luck, and welcome back, Chef Andrew. But please, please, don't ignore the "front of house" and some basic rules of table service for fine dining. We will come back, with open minds, but we cannot pay "fine dining" prices for low-grade service. If you're going to make it, you'll need locals like us for those cold winter weeknights when the tourists are not around. Best of luck. We're rooting for you with fingers crossed.

If you eat out that much, statistics say that you have had some poorly paid , disgruntled, restaurant worker urinate, spit or somehow contaminate your food.

I'll bet Real Vermonter if you disclosed your true identity when restaurants in the area saw you coming they would turn out the lights.. GET A LIFE!
Mr. Andrew is undoubtedly too busy preparing for his day at the restaurant to stay on here and quibble back and forth with the likes of you. Word of mouth works in Bennington and from every mouth I've heard nothing but good words.. Keep up the good work Chef Robert Andrew....
I've got an idea REal Vermonter, if you have so much experience in the business why don't you open a place.. there sure are enough empty store fronts. Show us all what you've got..

Sooo, 5 establishments have a score of 89, and you will only eat at one? Doesn't make sense!! I recently ate at the Station, and the food was excellent, service was better than some of the more popular establishments, and I felt fine after! Many of the establishments listed are no longer open, a few haven't operated in a few years. One that I can see is just a barroom. I hope that Andrew can overcome the haunting of Galipeau!! The only advice I have for him at this time, change the damn name and make it your own, it hasn't been The Bennington Station we all knew in many years.

It is a title he has earned through much schooling, training, and experience! You don't address a member of the law enforcement as Officer? Sad that you would compare Bob to a sewer worker or shit shoveler or Hooker!!! What is your profession? Disabilty check acceptor Bill? Sorry, couldn't resist! It is truly an honor for him to be called Chef! Some take the term too lightly.

Blah blah blah. Whens the last time you saw a newspaper headline with "Officer Jim-bob" or "Teacher Jill" or "Senator Bernie" with no last name presented???

Its pretentious for 99% of "chefs" who are nothing more than glorified short order cooks.

Vermontis so easy we forget! What about Joe The Plumber? Thats what I thought! So if we eat at Chef Robert Andrew's place enough you say that eventually we will encounter a poorly paid , disgruntled, restaurant worker who would urinate, spit or somehow contaminate your food? YUCK! I think you are right about that stat though!

aieou I never said I had experience in the restaurant business but if you want to think that please feel free to think it! Now that it's out in the open I feel that Chef Robert Andrew owes it to himself, his family, workers and customers to address these issues! If he doesn't want to thats his problem because I don't care one way or another!

Sorry DiscustedVtr I made an error and should have drawn the line at 90! I don't eat at any of the 89 rated ones! Good eye though! DiscustedVtr the food was excellent, service was better than some of the more popular establishments? Which ones? It would be nice to know your research so we could discuss it here openly! I don't think a so called haunting of Galipeau is all of Chef Robert Andrew's problems! If Chef Robert Andrew's title was earned through much schooling, training, and experience why does he get such a low rating by the Vermont Health Department? Like Vermontis said "chefs" are nothing more than glorified short order cooks!

The problem being Real Vermont you find fault in everyone you seem like your not happy with anything if you go and look at all of your comments on everything it isnt very nice.. The man is trying give him a break will ya, if you choose not to eat there that is your choice but doesnt mean others have to follow you, Others have there own opinion on this, It is fine and dandy you have things to say but dont always find negative things to say all the time.

I don't but if you want to think that Give it a rest please feel free to think that! Remember all the good things I said about Joe... Why bother when you don't even believe what I write! So do you have any words of support for Chef Robert Andrew and his operation or are you just here to bash others for voicing their opinions? What good did your silly statement do for this discussion? Thats what I thought!

Hey, Real Vermonter, it seems to me that Chef Andrew did indeed try to answer your question. I can only imagine he got his information from the salespeople of the area as his menu is not exactly like any other in town and prices are often based on volume.

Just so you know, you sound like a meanie and it isn't very attractive. Real Vermonters that I know don't pick fights.
Real Vermonter wrote:
How about your sorry for not answering my question and addresing my concerns? Which restaurants in the AREA did you research for the prices on these type of entrees that indicated that you were priced LOWEST? You said it not me so this is your chance to explain it to all your potential customers! You were the one who said "Plaese feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, I welcome all feedback!
[email protected] " This is your chance to respond to the questions and concerns you welcomed in September 08. I wouldn't pass it up if I were you! Silence isn't golden in the restaurant business! If you don't keep plugging all people have to go by is what is written and word of mouth which doesn't seem to be working in your case! Give it a shot, what do you have to lose at this point?

Chef Robert Andrew asked and I answered! I asked and where is Chef Robert Andrew's answer? It's his problem not mine! I don't eat there anymore so I solved my problems! No one was asking for a a perfect rating on the violations but the ones stated are the ones which cause the most problems in the restaurant industry these days so there is cause for concern! 5 Critical points deducted for Potentially hazardous food meets time and temperature requirements during storage, preparation, display, service and transportation frankly have MUCH to do with food safety! If your claims to having spent many years in the restaurant business are true and I have no reason to doubt you, you of all people should know seriousness of the health departments charges! I have knowledge of food manufacturing and the health department so I know what these numbers mean! It's inappropriate and unethical to get that many critical points deducted! Maybe Chef Robert Andrew should study the way Burger King does it! Who wants to serve such a miserable person anyway? Chef Robert Andrew better want to serve miserable people or he will be a victim of his own demise! Self implosion is not a pretty thing!
You have an excellent point (no pun intended). My point was that I don't necessarily consider the number of points, but the areas they are in. ANd the hazardous food preparation is indeed a really important concern!

Chef – The word chef comes from the French word for head, also used to mean head cook. The English word chief comes from the same source. So, because he is cheif of the kitchen and cooking, it makes sense to call him "chef". Ever had a "coach" and call him/her anything besides "coach"? We call Professors "Professor" or "Prof" or "Profe" and we call Doctors "Doctor" or "Doc". Were you really looking for an answer to this question?

P.S. If I knew a hooker named Mindy, I'd probably refer to her as "Hooker Mindy."

Keep in mind though, it was five points off for that. Five, not fifteen, not fifty, just five. An 89 was a B+ was I was in school, I wouldn't have minded a few more of those. The word "hazardous" is a bit inflamatory, don't you think?

McDonald's scored higher on that poll, go there. Seriously though, their tomatoes killed people this summer; not to mention the wacko's with guns don't tend to target fine dining for their vengence. Enjoy!
