'Outsider' crabs can brighten a dull winter day

When it comes to crabs, I am provincial. Because I reside in Maryland, home of the blue crab, I have a hard time working up interest in "outsider" crabs, the ones that hail from beyond the Chesapeake Bay ... Full Story

The crabs at Bill's Terrace Inn are from Texas and Louisiana and they are wonderful!

I think crabs are overrated... The effort to get to the meat is not worth the payoff.

Compared to lobster, for example. It tastes just as good and a lot easer to get too.

On the other hand, if someone else does all the work, as in crab cakes, then its ok.

I guess this is heresy but I tried 2 Maryland crabs at a famous crab house. I got the large size. Only one had any meat in it! The other one had a few bites of tasteless meat. The shells were covered with a thick coating of old bay seasoning so it got all over my mouth. Accompanied by what was supposed to be drawn butter but it had no taste either. The waiter offered to replace the empty one but by then I just didnt care. Also had the famous stone crabs in Miami once and they were flavorless too. I guess I have to go to Maine and get a lobster, nothing beats that for taste!

Crab meat from anywhere is sweeter than lobster meat. That's why you need butter with lobster. I like both, but if I was going by meat taste, the crabwould win every day of teh week
