There are 66 comments on the Press-Enterprise story from Sep 5, 2007, titled Recipe Exchange: Chile Rellenos from Gay and Larry's. In it, Press-Enterprise reports that:

“Part of the charm of Gay & Larry's was the fact that the meals all came served on very hot metal plates, some of which I have”

Sherri Anderson, of Riverside, came to the rescue of Shelley Moore, also of Riverside, who was searching for a chile relleno recipe similar to the one from the former Gay and Larry's Mexican Restaurant in ... via Press-Enterprise

G&L's rellanos WERE simply the B-E-S-T my wife Gloria (from Peru) and I have ever had...(in our 60+ years!). We lived in Riverside from 73-76 while I was beginning my Government career and frequented G&L's regularly. Every time we search for Mexican food, we ALWAYS measure the rellanos against G&L's...and there's never been an equal. At this point (in life!)...we, now, almost never order rellanos...because we have come to the conclusion that there can NEVER be an equal.
If anyone out there in G&L Land knows of a good rellano in the Phoenix area...please post to this website. MANY thanks (in advance)!

I knew Manuel and Tina and dated there daughter Dottie, they were not illegals . I went with them to T.J. in the early 70s to pick up all the new chairs for the Restaurant. My Grandfather knew Manuel way back in the 50s they worked together at Riverside Cement. They were fine upstanding American Citizens. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, or whatever.

I am 36 yrs old and I grew up eating at gay and larrys. In fact my father asked my mother to marry him in the corner booth of the front room. I guess you could say that it was a big part of my familys life. Lol I am sorry to hear about all of the problems that she has been thru since she decided to retire. I would love to talk to someone who knows more about the menu and any info on what happened to the booths there. Please contact me at: [email protected] thank you.

I like you have spent my G & L afterlife comparing the rellenos. All but have given up. Did you ever get a response for a recipe? Salsa?

I started going to Gay and Larry's since the 60's. when family from out of town came by, thats where we took them to for group dinners. When I graduated high school, that was my choice for dinner with friends. Even after I moved out of the area, if I ever ade it within 50 miles of the restaurant, I would find a way to get there. Somebody mentioned a cookbook. Did that happen? I would love to get a copy.

Chile Rellenos Enough oil to fill your deep fryer (they need to bob free in oil)

1 27-ounce can Ortega Whole Green Chiles (12-14 chiles per can)

3 cups Krusteaz Complete Buttermilk Pancake Mix

2 cups water

12-14 ½-inch-square by 2 ¼-inch-long pieces of Velveeta Cheese

½cup corn starch (for dredging)

Fill deep fryer to manufacturer's recommended amount and heat to 375 degrees. Remove chiles from can, drain and lay on paper towels. Dry them thoroughly (pat dry if necessary). Mix pancake mix and water to form thick batter. Place Velveeta piece inside chile and dredge in corn starch. Dip chile into batter covering entire chile (batter will be thick). Drop carefully into hot oil. Cook for about 2 minutes, turning to ensure even browning. Remove when golden brown. Enjoy.

I am the granddaughter of Tina & Manuel Ynda...Gay and Larry's was owned by my aunt Trudy! Jim has been apart of our family in the past, yet we have not had the opportunity to keep in touch with him! Hello Jim! Now,my father (bless his soul)is the son of my grandparents; Tina & Manuel Ynda and as fate would have it met my mother Darla Ynda,(at that time 16yrs) in the very kitchen(as a cook) where she learned all the secret family recipes from my grandmother (Tina Ynda)and thats how my parents met!Furthermore, my father Richard Ynda,(at that time 19yrs)was the dishwasher! My mother knows all the secret recipes from Gay & Larrys as she had lived more than half her life in the very kitchen! There is no comparison....ANYWHERE!!!
Thank You!

There was a lot wrong with that hell hole. The back room sat over a old ceptic tank, thats why the floor would crack and give way when you walked on it. Imagine if that floor gave way when there was a party of 10 at that back table by the window?
The county wouldn't let Trudy sell, because there was too many code violations that they "grandfathered" in since the establishment (used VERY loosely) was so old, and NO ONE WANTED THE JOINT due to the cost of improvements that were needed. Trudy even threatened the kitchen staff that if they "took" her recipes and used them at ANY other restaurant she would turn them into the INS (seeing that it was a INS nightmare in back, and a majority of the kitchen staff were illegals).
One good thing about working there was the fact the head hostess was a whore. Bathroom, kitchen, storage room, back by the payphone, anywhere she could she'd give it up.
Trudy is a cold hearted, self centered, ruthless bitch. She would sell her own familys soul for profit. She never took care of her staff, the good staff only worked there for ONE reason. THEIR customer base. Majority of the people came in to see the GREAT waitresses, the food was secondary.
Some people gave their heart and soul to that cess pool, only to get walked on by Trudy when they couldnt benefit her.
And as for her idiotic grandson Travis? He is just following in grandma's ways. He drained Trudy for her money growing up. Drugs, jail, theft, running up her phone bill with 900 numbers, Travis did it all. The safe was ALWAYS missing money when Travis was a busboy. The waitresses knew a idiot, always sticking his nose into "grown up business". Made his grandmother look a fool to the patrons of the place many a time.
He finally cost Trudy her home after causing the fire that destroyed the place. All Trudy's precious horse trophies, pictures, EVERYTHING gone.
Good job Travis, good job.
As for the chips and cheese recipe? Its simple, put cheese on chips and bake.
Its like asking how to boil water.
wow!!!! someone sounds like they didn't get a piece of the pie!!!! First of all I will have you know my PARENTS MET IN THE KITCHEN OF THAT RESTAURANT ..NOT TO MENTION MY GRANDMOTHER MADE THAT RECIPE WHAT IT IS TODAY!!!! AND WE ALL WERE BORN HERE IN RUBIDOUX CALIF...WE CERTAINLY ARE NOT ILLEGALS!!!!! MAYBE YOU SHOULD DO A LITTLE BIT OF RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO RUNNING YOUR MOUTH ABOUT SHIT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!!!

Gay and Larry's was a family tradition that lasted from the 50's to the early 2000's for me. The Chile Rellenos were the best ever on this plantet.
Sure wish I knew how to duplicate them, I've tried and have come close at home, but they're not the same.
