I must say that Indonesia is not a country worth visiting ... sorry about this, Andy if you read my posting. For starter, Jakarta is very dirty, you'll see trash and litter everywhere you go. I just can't imagine a capital city with this poor level of cleanliness.
I was fortunate to have my friend to show me around Jakarta & Bandung in which rarely tourists are shown to. Areas that you may see quite dirty and crowded are even in the downtown area.
I only remembered the streets named Sudirman, Thamrin and Kuningan that are quite representative for a capital city.
Any other areas you go, you'll feel like that you're in some third-world country with poor people and trash everywhere (I think Indonesia is still considered a third-world?)
Reading this post, I have to beg a differ. Last month was my first trip to Indonesia, in particular Jakarta. Coming from America to a third-world countries like Indonesia, I knew what to expect. Not much.
When I got there, it was hot, and humid and so crowded! The perfect condition for me to hate! My first day there was so dragged down by the heat. I stayed at the hotel room n didn't go out. But at night, I remembered a taxi driver said this to me while I was in Malaysia : u dont look for the beauty of the country by how clean or how messy it is. u see it from the people, because the beauty of a country is reflected from how the people who were born and raised in that particular country act. So, yea i changed how i think about Jakarta. And mygod IT IS AMAZING! Indonesians are not just nice and friendly, but they are extremely helpful and what i LOVE bout them the most is that despite their capability, they help you thoroughly. I remembered trying to ask the direction from a 'ojek' driver. A some sort of public transportation there. And the old man who was incapable of speaking in english, ask his fellow driver who had rough english. Although, his attempt was useless, I DIDNT UNDERSTAND A THING! so, desperate enough i decided to go back to my room and spend another day inside. Before i could walk back, the 'ojek' driver suddenly pull my hand and ask me if i want to go with his ride to my destination, and not having indonesian money, i had to reject his generous offer. While he seemed to be dumbfounded with what i said, he persisted for me to ride, so i complied and thought if id just pay him in USD. so after few minutes, we've arrived at the destination and i was happy that we've got there! When i wanted to pay him money, he rejected me. All the way from downtown to the suburb area, i knew better that the gas wasn't little and he needs a bill to be paid and yet he refused to take my payment and left me with a smile and told me is phone number so that when I'm done I could call him back.
It was a pleasant experience. I would highly recommend Indonesia for all of you :)

Suatu Klarifiasi atas Tuduhan KRIMINAL Terhadap Aktifis KNPB
Aktifis Papua Merdeka yang Berjuang demi Sejarah Papua
menunjukkan bahwa Tentara Nasional Indonesia(TNI) dan Kepolisian
Negara Republik Indonesia (POLRI) dan pasukan terlatih dari Australia
Detasemen (DENSUS 88) Unit Kontra Teroris terus meningkatkan
melakukan aktifitas apalagi menyangkut perjuangan sebab ruang
teror fisik maupun teror mental. Penembakan dan penangkapan terus
terjadi di mana-mana guna menghentikan perjuangan sejarah
pembebasan bangsa papua.
